Smog and AC delete.

Can I just remove them and get a shorter belt or do i need to get some sort of delete kit with a pulley on it?

Thanks,
Matt

on the smog pump you can use a short belt as long as u dont have underdrive pulleys.....and on the ac the best way to go is the kit that relocates the power steering up close to where the ac was

Underdrive pulleys reduce the parasitic loss on the motor which in turn frees up a bit of power.

When i deleted my AC comp and air pump I used a shorter belt and made a bracket to relocate the belt tensioner. I didnt want to have to get the delete kits cause the whole point to removing them was to not have to drive any more pullies or accessories. I moved the tensioner to right about the water pump with a bracket i made and used my old belt to mach up what size belt i needed. i cut the belt and ran it with the new set up and tape the belt back together once it was cut to size and took it to advanced and told them i needed a belt that length. works great and i dont have any idler pullies to drive. I just drive the water pump, alt, and power steering now. Next im planning on getting some underdrives and getting 12v motors to drive the alt and powersteering, along with an electric water pump, and electric fan. then I will have no accessories to drive, freeing up all the power that was lost to the accessories.

u could always drive it with an electric motor so you dont have to run it off the motor. Summit sells electric motors for water pumps that have a motor, bracket and a small belt that hooks up to the pump but i dont see why u couldnt use that kit and hook it up to the pump.

the best way to do it would be to pull the ps up by where the ac was...the smog can be taken out for just a shorter belt..... in my opinion putting a delete pulley on instead of the object that was there is a waste of time.... shorter belt means more horses.... it''s been proven that a motor with no belt puts twenty more horses to the wheels ...but you cant really do that so everyone usually just strives to use the shortest belt possible....

How do you mean? I'm running underdrive pulleys, and no smog pump. I have an 82 1/2" belt. (with A/C)

You can remove the smog pump but you need either an idler pulley or move the power steering pump up (like on non a/c mustangs) when you remove the a/c. Just running a shorter belt won't work because it will make contact in the middle in the water pump area. FYI, a/c doesn't rob any horsepower when its off or at wide open throttle so don't use that as a reason to remove it. If it works, I'd keep it.

You can just reuse your stock tensioner... like what mustank did

i've used this setup on an 87 with smog and ac deleted without moving the ps up and it's been running without a problem for the last year.

Only if you get rid of your power steering. I've been running that belt set up like for years but I'm not a pussy so I don't need power steering.

hahah my turbo car was converted to manual steering two years before I stopped using it for dd duty so im not a pussy neither but in this case I've used the above method but longer belt on a friends 87 coupe that still had power steering. We just left it in the stock location and it's fine.

The belt must slip like a mother ran like that. Still running the power steering there will be hardly any belt contact on the crank pulley. As soon as you load it by turning the wheels it has to be slipping. Certainly not an ideal set up but if its working, good for you guys.
