electric fan wires overheating bad

I have a 95 gt and my electric fan wires are getting so hot they are melting together. I have the power wire running straight to the battery, and the ground running through a toggle switch inside on the console. I keep burning through toggle switches too. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

When I hooked up things to a toggle switch i would put it on the pos. side, not the neg. side.
run a straight good ground and put the toggle on the pos side and see what that does for ya

I tried it on the pos side and it heated up just as much. I'll try the relay thing and see if that helps.

How old is the fan? Sounds like it is pulling to many amps & no fuse to protect the system.

It's not that old, probably a year. Do I need a fuse and a relay or just a fuse.

You need to put a relay in and switch the relay. You also need to put larger gauge wire in and a fuse. The reason you are burning up switches, is because the fan draws too much current for the switch. The reason you are burning up wires is because you are using too small of a wire. You're going to want to find out how many amps the fan draws because that will tell you what size wire and relay to use. If you can find that out, I can point you in the right direction.

Basic automotive electrical 101. Check the load (amp draw) of the accessory, determine if it is low enough to be wired directly through a switch (check switch rating). If not, use the proper relay (check rating). The relay is triggered by a light gauge wire and acts as a heavy duty switch. Always use the proper gauge wire and ALWAYS use a properly sized fuse or breaker. Don't just twist and tape wires together, this will result in a poor connection and cause resistance heating at the joint. Solder the joint or use stake-on connectors. Always secure the wires in a loom or at least wire tied to a non-abrasive attachment point(existing loom). I look at an average of 12 car fires a year that result from someone improperly wiring add ons.

your running battery voltage into your cabin? not smart.

run a relay and up the guage of the wire.

too much resistance in the line.. shit will catch on fire.

You don't have a relay, that is why it is melting the wires. Relays for everything!
