Man, replacing the heater core SUCKS. I feel your pain.

The one thing I can tell you is get a Ford heater core. We got a napa one for my '87, and it wasn't built nearly as stoutly, nor did it have near the core density - just in handling it, we broke off one of the pipe nipples and my dad had to solder it on.

there are 4 bolts holding the cover on you should be able to do it with the box in place if not did you pull the bolts off from the engine bay on the firewall i believe there are 2 nuts on long studs holdinh the box up.

thanks for the pictures!!! didn't need them i ended up getting it... the reason why it was a bitch was i have my A/C still hooked up and i couldn't pull the whole box out from the firewall... i had to just pry the top open and just pull it out and slide the new one in... much more difficult i must say!!! well now its just reassemble for me and i dont know where everything goes LOL but its gettin there

this was my first heater core replacement and my last for free!!!

i can't wait till i can actually be rippin it apart to put GO FAST into it!!!

thanks again... and lets pray everything works the way its suppose to

The car was built around the heater core, as I like to say. Been there done that...I feel your pain. I had a 91 5.0 years ago that didn't have a failing heater core, but had one of the pipes come right out of it when I was trying to get the hose off of either the inlet or outlet side to put a T-fitting in for a flush kit. You talk about being pissed off...I was sick to my stomach for awhile thinking if I had not messed with it I wouldn't have had to tear my whole car apart to replace it. I can honestly say the labor to get it done at a shop is every bit worth the hassle. But if you're like me and have some car skillz you can do it...it's and easy job...just very labor intensive.

Yeah my heater core started leaking about to years ago... After hearing everyones nightmares about it and seeing that the Ford flat rate on it was 8 hours I decided to just bypass it as its not my daily driver.

When you switch the knob does it change anything? I had a simialr issue once and it was because I didnt have a good seal where the vacuum lines meet the knob assymbly.

does one of the cylinders have to be compressed when reattaching the lines for the vacuum module for the different vent selections???
