how much power??

im building a street/strip motor for right now and i want to get into the 10's with it. its a completely stock bottom end but the top end will be fully built so when i build the motor i am replacing i can bolt on the parts and slap it in. im going to run a 284 comp cam, edelbrock victor jr intake and 650 4bbl edelbrock carb on the top end but need suggestions on heads to go with that cam and intake setup. should i buy some assembeled heads or get a bare pair of stock cast irons and have them worked? i am on a budget and have at the most $1000 to spend on heads (with valves and springs). anybody have any suggestions and will this setup get me into the 10's or atleast the 11's??

It will be tough to get in the 10's with that setup without nitrous. If you use the iron heads your chances are even less to get in the 10's they are very heavy. your caption on the bottom says after new years 331 stroker. With that you can get mid to low 11's maybe. you will have to get rid of quite a bit of weight on that ride also... anythings possible if you want it bad enough...

The $1000 that you have to work with won't get you anywhere near your goal. Put that money toward a good set of heads and then keep saving money. You will need about 500hp to run 10s. Stock cast iron heads won't make that kind of power no matter who works on them so scrap that idea. You will need AFR, TFS or Victor Jr. heads.

i might just put all of my top end parts in the block i just got and not worry about it and fully build the next one and take my time instead of trying to hurry and get it done before the track opens up again. i need to worry about the looks of my car and all the wiring issues first because it is also my daily driver. i paid $650 for it and i got a $650 car so i couldnt really expect much out of it. was gonna be just a track car but my truck broke down so i had to get tags. ill be starting on the motor in about 2 weeks after bills are paid.

Taking your time would be a good thing. Take your time, do it right and have patience. In the end you will be happy. Just remember that these cars are never finished no matter what you think and what your plans are. Something new always comes out and ideas constantly will roll thru your head. Do things in stages and attack one area at a time.

It would be a lot easier to reach 10's with a stroked 351. Like stated above, you will need about 500hp to run 10's which is the very limits of a factory 302 block. You will need either a Mexican block or an A4 block.

you can easily reach the 10's with a 331 or 347.

Wouldn't it be easier to start with 351 cubes and build from there rather than a 302 based block? I wasn't saying you can't run 10's with a 302...I was saying it would be EASIER with a 351 as a starting point and without worrying about the intregrity of a stock 302 block as you reach 500hp

It would be easier to start with a 351 but is not hard at all to do it with a 302 based engine. I'm partial to the 351W so that is where my vote goes.

i had the chance to get a built 351 but why not have a 302 so when you run the guys with 351's you can say you have a smaller motor. with the right suspension, gears, and tranny alot can be accomplished without having to push the block to its limits. i used to be the same way with my truck it was a s-10 blazer with a 4.3 V6 and it would run a high to mid 14 sprayin constantly and when people would ask me what was under the hood nobody was expecting to see a meek little 4.3 in there. from what ive learned and only being 17 and actually realizing this is that it all comes down to about anywhere from 1/4-1 horsepower to $1 so money is the key to going fast. there is no cheap way to do it
