good lower control arms and subframe connectors is a great start. to answer your origional question about making more power, there's nothing better than a set of heads. everything you do is limited by the flow of your heads

Lower arms as in lower control arms? Those shouldnt make your car actually any "lower" in the back they just support your cars rearend more. Helps with torque and most of all prevents wheel hop so you can actually get those 10 in tires in the rear to stick to the ground and not be all over the place.

If you are a T-top like i am i would also recommend subframe connectors like Stangfreak said. They helped me alot with flex on the car, since we have T-tops it has a little bit more flex in it than most Mustangs our style. I noticed the difference. Also you can get them pritty cheap too. I found some Weld ons for like $60 bucks or so. I woud go Weld on, IMO.

Heads can get expensive some cheaper options would be the GT-40 heads and intake from say a junk yard, ebay or Craigslist. I believe they cam in explorers from 98 And up ( someone correctly if im wrong please ) But you can get those pritty cheap and you will notice a difference in preformance as well.

Also i would recommend upgrading your clutch cable, at least in the 85's they were made of a plastic or nylon composite and will strip if your ride the car hard to much. You can pick up a good clutch cable and parts for Around $100. And they are made of steel. But that is only if you have a Manual tranny. Hope this helps a little! Good Luck!

Like Borden said the headers are a must and the gears need to be in asap. you will love what you get out of the header alone.
