yea subs is the place to start. I had upper and lower arms for years but the best money I ever spent on the wife's car was the adj. Strange struts I put on and good rear shocks. while my 60ft got better the consistency of the car and the 60ft is just so much better. The car works much better and it is not just relying on the tire to do all the work. So I find myself not having to do as much of a burn out now.

subframes are a great way to start
just remember, when you get springs, you're gonna need to change your shocks/struts as well if you're not getting into serious racing, i wouldn't worry about a-arms and k-members and stuff til later on however, rear upper and lowers would be good

You might as well take the smog pump off... as far as a know its only necessary to have if you have cats... I dont have cats either so took mine off last winter and it didnt hurt a thing and the extra room on the passenger side of the engine bay is definitely nice!
