Yes the design is more superior in theory but they have yet to make a rotary engine big enough that makes any kind of impressive horsepower. So as far as production engines goes, the LS1 that was suggested is superior to the production rotatary engine.

I had a 79 RX-7. It may be a nice design on paper but for a 1.0 liter or what ever it was, it burned a hell of a lot of oil and only got about 15 MPG even though the car was relatively small and light. I'm sure the design is a lot better now.

they do use a butt load of fuel. but thats cause its spinning at 12000 rpm's imagine if a v8 spun that fast how much gas it would use.

exactly, in my opinion a rotary engine is a good design but they lack the ability to make torque because there is no direct force upon the rotation assembly, instead they are spinning a puck. they have extreme rpm ranges, which allows them to make up for not being able to produce torque. but the extreme rpms make efficiency hard to get out of a rotary engine.

yes they don't make torque. They use so much gas and burn oil because those are used as lubricants for the apex seals. And with apex seals just got to upgrade them and then you will have a reliable motor. Mazda is working with new materials for apex seals but for now carbon is the best. They just don't put think enought ones on the rx8 or any rotory motor to make safe power. Yes they have flaws but what motor doesn't?

If a V8 spun 12,000 rpm and had heads to support that kind of RPM it would make a shit ton of horsepower. A smile would be on everybody's face.

before i say this keep in mind i have respect for rotaries so im not "just another muscle head" but if the rotary is God of engines and is superior why do so many rx7 owner swap the ls1 into them

many people don't understand how the motor works. So they swap. But the majority buy them with blown motors and just drop a v8 in. Actually the most popular motor I see in them is a chevy 350.

same reason they swap ls1`s into fox bodies and 240/280z`s......and probably just to be a little different.
