3g alternator upgrade

Just finished the 3g upgrade. Seem to work better but my fans still seem to pull on it pretty hard at itle. didn't get the chance to leave the driveway due to current headlight issues. will check to see tomorrow. I also heat wrapped the starter. I still think I need a new one. I let the car heat up to around 160 and shut it off then try to start it, it hesitates then spins and starts the car. It is sitting a good 4 inches from my down pipe I just think its going out because of the general heat in the bay.

so one question I have, on the starters in the late foxes, not sure exactly what years but since they started with the solenoid on the body rather than on the side wall, are they rated for higher torque than the older ones? I mean other than high torque starters obviously. And I dont imagine for any reason that I should need a high torque starter since I run a low compression (about 9 to 1) boosted set up. but if anyone thinks different Im open to suggestions. thanks

What do you have for a fan set up? If you have one of those junk Taurus or Mark VIII fans, they will bog down a nuclear powerplant because they draw so much power so it really doesn't matter what alternator you use.

1992 is when they started with the high torque starters in Mustangs. I've had a lot of problems with the stock Mustang starters. I put a Powermaster in everything I own now. I haven't had a failure in 8 years of using them.

i had the same problem with my starter that you are having, bought a new one and havent had any issues with it. i also had long tubes running right on top of it and drove it everyday and never had a heat issue with no wrap.

and for the fan thing, are u running 2 or 1 fan set up?

if a 2 fan then wire each fan into its own switch so that you can run only 1 fan at a time, i know with my car i find my self rarely even using my fans due to the fact that my engine hardly sits in the middle of the guage and i have all factor cooling equip (minus the ac condenser)

most of the aftermarket high torque starters are smaller anyway other than being stronger.usually alternators dont cut in until above idle so thats why the fan puts a lot of stress on the charging system. those mark fans draw around 80 amps when they turn on

actually I run a probe fan set up which is dual. I have it all wired through a single switch and 30amp relay. one pushes and one pulls. I need both fans because when I actually do drive the car (rarely, sadly), it gets pretty hot since I run non intercooled and fairly high boost most of the time. I used to have cooling problems when I ran a single flex a lite electric fan so maybe it was too hot then and fried my starter. I need a new one no matter which way I go. Im still thinking exhaust wrap is on the to do list though just for velocity purposes, and then the cooler temps will just be an added plus.

What Flex-a-Lite fan did you have and what radiator? A Flex-a-Lite Black Magic fan will cool anything. If you have over heating issues with one of those fans then you have an issue somewhere else. I've run those fans with just about every different power combination you can think of and never had any cooling issues. I also swear by Griffin aluminum radiators and electric water pumps.

Try installing your old pully on the 3g alt. It is a bit smaller. The tollerance between the alt and the pully will be close so just a bit of sanding with some 80grit paper on the alt body(area between the body, and pully) will do the trick.

I dont know which type of fan it was, it was on the car when I got it as was the radiator which I think is probably just one of the universal aluminum radiators you get from summit

I just found a fan on ebay that looks pretty much identical to my old one. Im not sure if this is the same as you are talking about though

eBay Motors: Flex-a-lite 175 MUSTANG 5.0 BLACK MAGIC ELECTRIC FAN (item 270284027500 end time Dec-05-08 08:26:42 PST)

so I just took the car around the block. started to bog. died. my dumb ass ran it out of gas. had the wife bring me some and got going again. made a loop and my feet got covered with smoke. pulled over to find out that my wiring melted from my power block to my relay for my fans. Im curious if maybe the output of the new alternator made it do that. any thoughts?

found the smoking problem. it wasn't the alternator. It was a hot lead that had managed to get stripped back a little and ground out. no big deal
