Well, I was thinking to just buy the kit, bolt it up, than just weld it in..

Brett,
I bought mine from Wild Rides and put them in an LX coupe that had really bad boxes. They worked just like they said they would. If your boxes are not compromised, you can probably do just fine by welding up the stockers. That's what I did with my GT and it's had no problems launching on slicks and delivering 1.59 60' times.
Good Luck,

To answer your question, the go on the outside but bolt through to the interior. I had mine welded down inside the car, after removing the back seat to do all this, and it won't come loose. You might crack the floor somewhere else but I doubt you will develop any cracks where you install your Battle boxes.

Something that I did recently that made a huge difference in the entire "solid" feel to the car was to install UPR spherical bushings on the upper rear torque arms and new Urethane everywhere else.

It actually hooked so well on M/T Drag Radials that the TREMEC 3550 input shaft snapped. Oops! Once you start changing things, it never ends!

If you are going to install the Battle Boxes, it's a great time to install either all Urethane bushings or a combo like mine, while everything is out. You may have to save a bit longer, but they aren't expensive.

If you look at the top of the picture, to the right of the gear housing at the upper control arm, you'll see where the aluminum spherical bearings go.

Good luck,
Jim

Hey Brett,
I paid $102.00 for them locally with tax at a small shop. I think you can get them online for about $88.00 if you can wait a couple days for delivery. From UPR they are $99.00 MUSTANG-UPR Products.com

With the devaluation of the dollar (provided you don't get taxed to death) you may get them even cheaper.

Good luck with your project.
Jim

We'll get this.

Take a look at the lower control arm and follow it up to the floor pan. That depression in the pan into which it ends is where the Battle Box goes (after removing the control arm). That's the torque box. The Battle Box is then bolted and or welded into the torque box. The lower control arm then goes back into place. The pictures will show the underside of the car and the finished installations from the inside.

Also, you might want to look at these websites:

FORDMUSCLE.com - Four suspension mods for late-model Mustangs!

Battle Box Install - Mustang : MikeFordMustang.com - Pictures, Videos, Write-ups, How to's, Parts for Sale, Guest book

1989 Ford Mustang Notchback - Project Real Street Suspension And Chassis - 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords

If this doesn't help, let me know.

I did this awhile ago, Major PITA. If you are going to do it, plan on the car being down for a few days.

Also, the lower plates make a good place to tie in a roll cage to the torqu boxes.

I had heard the same thing and was prepared for a bunch of noise. So far it hasn't happened. Now, understand, my Mustang is no Mercedes when it comes to noise, but they don't seem to be adding to the noise, vibration, and harshness any more than the urethane bushings.

Unless you are looking for a super quiet ride, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
