Tremec Rebuild?

Hey guys i have a Tremec from a car a bough this last summer and am redoing myself (as much as possible) for both the experience and cost effectiveness.

But my question is, can i rebuild my Tremec by myself ? Like from using a Book Manual? My Dad said he used to just buy manuals and go threw the steps and thats how he learned. But I have heard Tremec's have a lot of very small peices in them and i dont know if its like gears, where its just best to have them done by someone who really knows what they are doing. If you guys have any imput it would be much appeciated.

Also im planning to do a couple things with the motor and Tranny, like replace the main seal, new clutch, heads, and was wondering, if i had the Rad. and everything out and the tranny out would i be able to put in a new cam, like a stage 2 cam, without pulling out the motor? I have heard it being done but i figured you guys would know best. I figured with enough room in the front of the motor and with the tranny droppped i could hook up the chain and slide it in. Or is it not possible with out pulling the motor?

Please let me know if ya have any advice, i would really appeciate it. Thanks a lot guy for the help! - The Novice.

Yes you can drop your cam in without pulling the motor. But I dont suggest just throwing your cam in if youre going to be putting a lot of work into this car. Do it right the first time.Granted its not necessary but IMO its worth it to keep everything running smooth. Here is a link that may help a little with the cam work

the tranny can be rebuilt yourself if you have alot of attention to detail. if you do it buy the manual make sure you read it a few times prior to opening it up. take pictures of every peice you take off before removing it. make little notes on each step so you know what you took off and what to look for when re assymboling it. what is wrong with it that you want to rebuilt it? dont buy anything till after you take it apart cause you only need to replace the parts that are broke or worn out. keep in mind bearings need to be pressed out and a beaing splitter might need to be used to take them off. in a transmission just because something looks good doesnt mean it is you must follow spesific inspection critera to deturmine if something is good or bad. you should always replace syncros if its open.

few things you will need,
snap ring pliers
dial indicator
clean enviorment
small punch
small chissel
hammer
lots of carb cleaner
lots of rags
access to a press
ither a gear puller or a flat hard surfice like a thick peice of steal.
proly a few other odds and ends.

what tremic are you rebuilding?

You can do your cam with the block in the car - there is lots of space, just take out your rad. Never done a tranny, so no comment.

You could, but unless you're a 500 pound rolling porker, you should be able to easily stand in the engine bay and slide the cam in.

Ok cool, thanks. It would def be nice if i dont have to pull the motor

Well im no where near 500. I look more like a 14 year old school boy than an lard ass...I only weigh about 115, on a good day, lol.

e3sean/Mystic Venom -

Guys sorry it took me so long to reply, i am rebuilding (thinking of anyways) rebuilding a what i was told is a Tremec 3550. I know it is a Tremec b/c i had it on lifts and saw it written "Tremec" I am guessing 3550, but i am unable to read the little metal tags they attach to them, so once i drop it i should know for sure. Obviously i am not that far yet, school has made my car a slow project But i plan on rebuilding in either way, weither its myslef (hopefully) or if needed ill send it out.

But im just trying to get a feel for if i can even do it myself. The Main Problem so far (havent driven it much the engine is torn appart, but am putting it back together and when i do ill be able to really test it and see what all of its problems are) But The main thing so far is 2nd gear grind sometimes, especially if im hard on it in 1st and shift to 2nd it grinds and doesnt like it (but sometimes i can get away with it) also when shifting if i fo get it, it might pop out right away.

Again i have to put the motor back together and am close but just wanted to get a feel to know if i could even do it myself or no way in hell. Sorry i dont know alot of details yet, but will soon, just trying to get a feel, thanks for the help guys!
