thermostat stuck open? (not a Mustang)
I don't frequent any other car forums so I figured I'd ask here.
My little 1.3 liter Ford Aspire I use as a commuter never freaking warms up. I did not mind until it started getting cold. The temp gauge never goes a fraction above C and the heat is not very hot. Is it possible for a thermostat to stick open? Maybe the engine is too small to generate enough heat but I don't remember it being this bad in the past winters

yes it could be that you need 2 replace your thermostat and any engine will get hot no matter the size

Thermostats are cheap, go ahead and replace it. Any engine should get hot (as stated above) Also check the coolant sending unit or coolant temp sensor, could be bad as well causing the gauge to not read.
Might as well drain and change your coolant while you're at it, never hurts |

I'll swap it out this weekend. I noticed some valve train ticking on start up recently on it as well so I'm wondering if it has been running cold for a while and a little sludge is starting to build up. My comment about the small engine and not heating up was kind of a joke because the engine is only rated at 57HP.

your valvetrain will always make nosie, some engine oils quiet it down more than others. Your guage reading should not effect your engine or heater temp. If its not getting hot inside then its most probrobly the thermostat

forgot to mention Autozone can test your coolant temp sensor for free, might as well check out related problems/concerns while you are going to be replacing the thermostat. And stay with the OEM thermostat temperature or one step higher if you aren't getting it to heat up.
