302/347 or 351W
OK, I have a 302, and have been thinking about stroking it to a 347.
I have also heard that I would be better just buying a 351W I thought it was hard to find a 351W, and would all of the electronic crap fuel injection, etc etc hook up to it. I don't think I want to go to carb. If I do the 302/347, I would like to take it apart myself, and put it back together. Is there some good books or articles on this? I have never torn an engine apart, so I would need a detailed manual. You know, stroking for dummies LOL Thanks, Trebor

im not a huge fan of the 347, it changes the angle that the rods travel and it helps wear the motor out earlier, it will last a while, it just wont have the longjevity that a non stroked motor would.
Id go with a 351 personally thats just me, heads will swap, upper intakes will swap, but the lower wont, its a wider block than a 302 and you will need a different dizzy also

A 347 is a perfectly fine reliable engine. Rod ratios mean nothing. A 347 has less of a rod to stroke ratio than a 454 Chevy and that is one of the most reliable engines around. I've had many 347s and not one of them burned a drop of oil or had any premature wear issues.
A 351W is a better choice in my opinion. Only because the block is stronger and the ability to go over 400 cubic inches is there if you decide to do so in the future. Building a 351W will also be cheaper for the average street car because you can use the stock crank and rods and not worry about them failing. The deck height is 1.3 inches taller (9.5 vs. 8.2) but a 351W fits without a problem in a Mustang. You will need different headers and distributor as mentioned above. Many companies make EFI intakes for 351W engines.

What about the piston/pin issue
I looked at this one site, and they mentioned going with a 331 because of the close relation to the oil-ring on the piston to the pin????
http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2002/04/331/ 351 blocks are very hard to find......................

351 blocks are dime a dozen, millions produced. There is nothing wrong with the 347, you can get 3 different rod lengths if you subscribe to the "5.400, 1.090CH pistons burn oil" theory. The only thing people forget with the 351 is hood clearance, headers, oil pan etc. If the little extra cost of the 351 does not bother you, thats the way to go.

OK, so am I asking the wrong questions?
OK, so am I asking the wrong questions?
I call and ask for a 351W, and I get a long silence. Should I be more specific? Thanks, Trebor

If you can...the 1971-1974 Windsor blocks were the strongest. They had slightly thicker main webbings.

69 and 70 351W blocks and cranks are the strongest, because they have a higher iron content. I have a 69 351W shortblock that has never been touched. Everything is standard, and I've tossed around the idea of selling it, but I haven't decided yet.

I've always heard the 69 and 70 blocks and cranks were better. I did a quick search and the only thing I could get to come up were conversations on other forums like this one http://forums.tccoa.com/showthread.php?p=890520 I'll keep looking.
