Header Question and Photo

I decided to buy a set of copper header gaskets and some ARP Bolts with the holes in the heads so I can safety wire them.

When I uses to work on airplanes I had to wire up hundreds of bolts over the years, so I am used to it. The bolts would never come loose, unless the wire broke, but it almost never happens.

I have no idea what kind of headers I have, and if they are any good. Also what does the threaded nipple and pipe that leaves the header do?

I don't know much about cars or headers!

Thanks !!!!

Oh Crap!

I have a problem! I just realized that the header has round ports and the heads have square ports.

The guy who sold me the car said it had a header leak.

What can I do now to get it to seal? Can I make my own gaskets?

If so, what can I make them out of that will last?

Those are stock headers. They suck. And yes, that thing your arrow is pointing to is where the EGR tube screws into. The tube goes up and bolts to your throttle body as well...

Did you ever figure out what heads are on that car? That will help us solve your leak issue... You are probably going to have to buy new headers to put on there. I would HIGHLY recommend it anyways... My MAC long tubes that I put on have square ports and bolted right up to my GT40P heads no problem (I also used a copper gasket and I have no leaks). I would suggest you get yourself a set of long tubes... Oh, and I would NOT make your own gaskets...

These headers have oval ports and the engine has square ports. They were on the car when I bought it.

Will any gasket work to seal it up until I can get the proper headers?

I tried a copper square port gasket and it leaked like hell!

I don't think you are going to find anything that is going to seal it up perfectly. You can't "put a square peg in a round hole"

but someone else might have an idea

They aren't stock headers. Stock headers don't have the flange running the whole length of the header, they are individually flanged. You should be fine with them. Go to Napa and get yourself Felpro 1415 header gaskets. If you want a header bolt guaranteed to never loosen up...Stage 8 locking header bolts from Summit. Make sure you get the set that is 3/4 inch long, not 1 inch.

Will is right about the EGR bung.

FWIW the headers look like a cheap set of flowtechs=junk. If you don't have the money for longtubes, BBK unequal shorties are nice too and fit perfectly.

Thanks for your help!

I have tried several different gaskets. The headers are oval port and the block is a square port.

I am not going to mess with them anymore! A square peg won't fit in a round hole. I give up. I am tired of messing around with it now!!!!

I will get some new headers.

I will start a new thread on what headers to get.
