trouble at the track...

ok, maybe its me or not, most likely its a driver mod that needs to be changed.lol. but when i'm at the track and i try to launch, i can't get into 2nd gear. i don't know what it is, i'll be in 1st gear mash the pedal and go all the way to about 4-5k rpm. this is where my problem begins. i start to shift into 2nd gear, but for some reason it won't go into gear, only until i go down to 3500rpm is when i can finally shift into 2nd gear, which wastes a sec or so off my time. is it me (most likely) or is it my tranny, or shifter???? has anyone else had this problem?? someone told me it could be the syncs in my tranny are off or bad.... what do ya'll think???? i can't get faster then 14.7 in the 1/4. btw, my mods are: steeda short throw, FRPP shorty headers, CAI, U/D pullies, smog pump delete, king cobra clutch (only 2-3 months old), sub frames, alluminum drive shaft, 3.73 gears, eddlebrock upper and lower intake, cam (don't know what size or brand), lower control arms, 75 shot of NO2, stock heads. i'm not the best with cars, but i should be running a lil faster then 14.7...... thank you guys for reading this long post. any help would help a lot.

with those mods you should probably be low 13's at least! if you've got a Steeda tri-ax, you can probably rule out the shifter being the problem. Tri-ax's are great. I would place a good bet that your syncro's are going out. how many miles on the car? it sounds like it's time for a tranny rebuild or replacement.

i don't know how much money you are going to be working with, but if you can, do both... you can probably find a rebuilt t5 for pretty cheap - keep your eye on the classifieds, craigslist etc.. and you could get some used GT40 or GT40p heads, have a valve job done and throw them on there for under $500. Or if you want try and find some used Twisted Wedges or Edlebrock heads (since you've already got the eddy intake that would be a good choice). it's totally up to you what you do with your money man.

Whoever said it could be the 2nd gear synchro is probably right, especially if the other gears engage smoothly when you upshift at 4-5k rpm. If you have the same problem with all the gears, it's more likely your clutch isn't releasing and may need adjustment.

well bullit95, i'm only having problems from going from 2nd to 3rd gear at or around 4-5k rpm. i'm not sure if thats normal for these cars or if it is my syncros... how much butt pain would it be to change out the syncros...???

put the car in nuetral from a stop and pull back on the gear shifter like you are going to second without pushing in the clutch and you should feel the car start to creep forward if not your syncros are definately bad...if the car goes forward its probably something else. and yes you should be a lot faster than 14.7 with that combo even though your heads are killing you

i've done that in the past, like the last couple weeks, just during normal driving conditions, and it goes foward.... i just baught a pro 5.0 shifter, so i'm going to see how that works, if not, i'm getting my taxes soon and i'm doing a whole tranny rebuild... thanks for your input!!! if anyone has any other opinions as to what it might be, i'm all for listening...
