Good Price for GT #2

I know there was just a thread on this, but I didn't want to hi-jack his and ask my same question...

I've got a buddy with a 94 GT - cloth, supposedly all-round good shape. The car has just over 200k on it, but has had the engine rebuilt just recently and a new auto tranny put in. I believe he said its lowered, and it has 18 inch rims on brand new tires last year. The kicker is that he said it has a little electrical gremlin that one day, the windows won't roll down, and the next day the radio won't work. I told him I'd give 1000-1500...am I off on that with all the money he has invested in it? I'm basically looking to buy the car to clean up and turn around to sell for a profit - we both win because he doesn't want the car at all anymore, and I just want to make a quick buck.

Thanks for any input guys.

I think if you can pick it up for $1500 that would be a real steal... but if the fresh rebuild really is good quality, then I would be tempted to go up a little more. $2000 would be good, then if you can figure out the electrical problem and clean it up really nice, you could probably sell it for $3000 and make a decent profit! Good luck!

Ya, thats kinda what I thought about $1500 - I mean, I understand its a high mileage car, but with everything rebuilt like that, it'd probably be pretty easy for some kid to convince his dad it's a good car to shell out some cash for.

Plus, he actually is taking it to a dealership to see if they can't figure out what is going on with the electrical. I'm in no way trying to by this car for myself, just wanting to buy it, put a little work into it/clean it up so it looks money, and turn a profit.

Ok guys - I went and looked at it and have some more details. Right at 200k, one pancake sized dent in the quarter panel, and a rock chipped hood, along with the torn drivers seat. Otherwise, its not too bad cosmetically aside from needing a good cleaning. It has some rusty chrome 18's on it, the tires are brand new though.

Now, for the bad. He had a new alternator put in, and after that the car is just always dead after he turns it off. I put a jump box on it, and it fired right up. However, after letting it idle for 10 minutes, the car didn't attempt to turn over. I know the car running isn't designed to charge the battery...so maybe the battery is just toast too? But, the radio won't work either - it turns on, but no sound out of the speakers. Also, the window won't roll down unless you tap the button like crazy. It goes up fine though. Is the new alternator that was put in just bad?

The car also has flows, a 'monster tach' and headers....along with cold air. Something that would be really appealing to a kid. I think I possibly have him talked down to $750 cash - any ideas on these electricals? I think I'm gonna take the car home if you guys think I can get that stuff figured out. I'll clean it, and put for sale signs in it the next day.

But what, do you think? He said the electrical problems didn't start until he got it back from getting the alternator in - it didn't do it before. Also, the serp belt seemed kinda loose, like the tensioner wasn't tightening it enough.

Well, I did it. The sick thing? I brought the car home for $700!

Looks like the serp belt is too long with the underdrive pullies, and it also has a bunch of fuses that aren't getting any power. Gonna sit down with a wiring diagram and go from there, but its time to flip this sucker and make a few bucks on it.

I'll give you a grand for it. Just give me a month and I'll get you that grand. You make $300 from just buying the car. and if you give me 3 months I'll give you double what you paid for it.

Car sold on Friday - I didn't even have it two weeks!

I had put about $200 more in the car, and had multiple hours of detail work into it since it was so filthy. As faded as the paint was, it buffed out amazingly well. Got it sold for $2500!

This is what it looked like before any cleaning:

This is what it cleaned up to look like:

The interior and engine bay were equally impressive. There was a helluva lot of car under all those years of mistreatment.

Thanks man! It definitely took a LOT of elbow grease, but its amazing what a car can shine back up to if you want to put the time into it. The car was by no means perfect, but for $2500 and 200,000 miles, the guy couldn't expect a Ferrari! Either way, I'm pretty sure he's happy, and I've got a little extra change in my pocket...and last I checked, that makes ME pretty damn happy!
