gear clatter?

i havent really heard of this before but thats what my mechanic thinks is going on in my car. Its like a constant grinding noise that is most noticable in 4th (at high rpms) and 5th gear. He also said he didnt think it was fixable unless i did a whole new tranny. I also heard this is typical in highly modified cars with after market transmission. Can anyone give me a further explanation or have any other suggestions.

thanks

never heard that before, i know once in a very great while mine might pop out of 5th depending how i shift into it, and slaming the gears 2nd to 3rd grinds alittle sometimes

edit: do you have a short throw shifter or anything like that? if so how long have you had it in there? and has it started grinding since you intsalled it, if so might be a bad install causing your issues

Ya i have a short throw shifter in it. I bough the car in the winter and never put it into 5th gear because of the weather and when i took it out from the garage this spring and took it on the highway i noticed the noise.

it could be your throw out bearing, does your clutch feel different when you hear the noise?

Its a bad bearing. He is right, the transmission has to come out. It can be fixed, you don't need a new transmission. But the part about it being typical in modified cars with aftermarket transmissions is wrong.
