What type of intake should I get?

So one day i was driving and a fricken Cobalt SS beat me by just a little bit. Money is a issue for me as im still going to school. so im deciding on a upper/lower intake. anyone got any advice? Edelbrock? Trickflow? So far the only mods i have on my car are some headers, catback, CAI, ignition coil. And im also looking around for a x-pipe.

The Cobalt SS is very quick (14.0sec 1/4 mile) so don't feel bad. With a few choice mods you can turn the tables and annihilate the same vehicle. Just decide what your goal is and then we'll help you select the right parts to get you there.
Do you want strong torque from idle-5500rpm or do you want it higher up the rev range and spin to 6000+rpm? Is your Stang going to be seeing mainly street use or will it be visiting the track a lot? Is your tranny manual or automatic?

first answer Bullitt's questions...

but I would recommend the Eddy RPM II over anything else.

Put the intake on hold and get a set of gears instead. You will get more from the gear swap than from the intake swap at this point.

You wont be anywhere near 350 hp with the stock GT cam and no blower. You're gonna have to pick one.

If that's your hp goal, then you should seriously look into the trick flow top end kit. That will put you right there and its a very well proven kit.

like around 2k for the kit, here ya go 87-93 ENGINE KIT, TOP END - STREET HEAT WITH BLACK POWDERCOAT MUSTANG, and you will need an intake elbow 94-95 THROTTLE BODY ADAPTER, 5.0L/5.8L 75MM THROTTLE OPENING - BLACK POWDERCOATED MUSTANG. with that you should be were you want to be.

In that case, do a 3.73 gear swap in the rear diff. before you do anything else. You'll really notice the difference in performance and responsiveness.
Then you can do heads/cam/intake as others have suggested. Any one out of the Trick Flow, Edelbrock, and Holley top end kits will get you at or above 350 flywheel HP (Trick Flow more like 360-370). You could also consider the AFR 165 heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM II intake, and the CompCams XE270HR-14 cam. The latter would be a killer combo.

with the money you spend on that kit...you can build a better set up....have you considered a stroker?

^^^^ now you're just gonna start confusing the poor guy
the kit is a great way to go if you're just starting into the modding world because it includes everything you need to do the swap. all you have to do is just pull it out of the box and go. there's no doubt what you said is absolutely right, White Thunder, but for his purposes I think the kit would be a good way to go. and if the trick flow kit is right at the edge of his budget, there's no way he's going to have the $$ for a stroker.

so Mike, just do right and save your money and in the mean time, do some research on different kits and what all is required to do the swap. Maybe you'll find something better. Good luck!
