throttle body
any thoughts on throttle body upgrades? Im going from a stock 94 cobra to i think I may just go with a bbk 70mm. not a bad price, will i notice a difference mainly in the higher rpm range? my car feels like its running out of steam around 5100 rpms

A throttle body will make very little difference at this stage. I think you'd be much better off doing headers/midpipe/catbacks first.

yeah i have the stock headers, o/r x pipe and flowmaster catback , Mac cai, mac underdrive pulleys, ffrp al.ds, 9mm wires, msd coil, king cobra clutch etc. it feels nice, but will be alot better when i put in those 410's. will i notice the throttle body after these mods? I also got a chiptune not too long ago to correct some timing issues so will that be affected with the tb?

You really won't gain much from a t/b upgrade. I would look at putting your money elsewhere - like towards getting your intake ported or a new set of headers.

You'll notice better throttle response and a little more power up top and less down low. I could tell a little difference on my 88

I went with a Summit Racing 75mm TB ($160) more than 2 years ago when my 5.0 only had a C&L 76mm CAI/MAF kit, hollowed out cats, and straight-through mufflers as mods at the time. Throttle response was noticeably improved and there was no loss of low rev torque. I'd also ported the upper intake manifold opening to the same 75mm size.
Don't believe anyone who tells you that a 75mm TB is too big for a near stock 5.0. It isn't. It's just simply more than you need but it allows room to grow if you do H/C/I mods later on.

^thats good to know cause im just finishing on my body work on my stock 94 and was looking to start somewhere on my car and a tb was one spot that came to mind (isnt too expensive and goes with the cold air) and was told that was only good for superchargers

i really wouldnt say there is a "good place to start" with modding 5.0 mustangs. You really wont "notice" great improvements until you start doing lots of things (one mod supports the others). The best way to start is from the ass-forward. Do gears, then suspension, then brakes, then fuel upgrades, then start tackling your engine.

That's mostly why you didn't notice much loss. If you put that 75mm on a STOCK mani it will suck. My car has a 70mm with 4.10 gears and low end really sucks until 3.5k then it rocket's. Feels like turbo lag

You're probably right. The stock intake manifold opening is less than 70mm so a 75mm TB would leave a step that'll cause turbulence and a loss of flow velocity. You definitely need to port the intake to remove that step and just leave a gentle taper.

if you can wait save and put a complete upper and lower intake, then heads and a cam, that will free up the top speed,or lack of steam at 5000rpms

Agree with doing gears as one of the first mods but whether 4.10s will be the right ones depends on what the rest of the performance set-up is going to be.

To port match a throttle body I couldn't imagine much but if you have a die grinder you can DIY easily.
Port matching is the most important part of TB replacement without it you might as well left the smaller TB on because thats the size of the hole the only thing you would add by a big TB with no match is turbulence and a loss in velocity ![]() But I'd definitely go headers first and get into the TB after big mods like heads and cam |
