Sounds like you also have a PIP sensor problem Mike. If you still have the original 15-year-old distributor, I suggest you just replace the whole thing rather than just the PIP sensor. Chances are you'll need to replace it sooner or later anyway 'cause the distributor shaft bearings will inevitably wear out, leaving a lot of play in the shaft that can break rotor tips (ask me howI know!).

I replaced the distributor because the rotor tips kept breaking, but it still keeps shutting off.

This same thing just happened to me. I recently rebuilt my engine and had to get a new dizzy. Got one from Congress auto parts and finished the car. Ran fine for a few weeks and then one night while driving on the highway it shut off and restarted on it's own. Two days later I wasn't so lucky when it again turned off while driving on the highway and I ended up having it towed home. I ended up changing and returning a bunch of sensors and even changed my computer and gave up. Next day my brother calls and tells me about all the info on the internet that points to the dizzy as the problem. But it's new I said, but screw it, tried everything else, why not and since it's under warranty. Replaced it with another new one and the car started rite up and has been running fine. Later a buddy of mine that works at Ford tells me that the remanufactured dizzy's use the cheap stuff inside and go bad. He said I should replace the pip or whatever else is in there with a new Ford unit. It's really frustrating when you buy new parts to fix a car and it still wont work only to find out later the new part was damaged from the start. This was not the first time this has happened to me.

Get a brand new OEM Ford dizzy in that case. You won't find a better one.

That's the best place to look except in my case, none of the Ford dealers in the UAE had one so I went for a Summit Racing billet aluminium dizzy instead.

I had the same problem. I replaced my ignition control module and it runs like a charm, aside from the things I have to fix for emisisons. ICM located in passenger side of engine bay below the air box or cai (whichever you have) its mounted up in a heatsink. I believe it was either a 3/16 or 5/16 deep socket I had to use to remove the two screws.

You said you also have a new ignition module and new coil. Check that there's no loose wiring or connections to those components. I'm scratching my head to think of anything else.

I just went through all this. Rebuilt my engine and bought new=reman dizzy from Congress auto parts. Car drove great for a week then boom, shuts off while driving on the highway. Had it towed home and replaced everything, even the computer which I didn't want to do but I was desperate. Car never turned on again. I gave up on it and was ready to send it off to a shop. My brother tells me the next day about how he's been reading up on the symptoms of the car and everything points to the dizzy? What, it's new, but I remembered it wouldn't be the first time I bought a new part and it was DOA. So went and got another one from the parts store cause it's under warranty. Car started rite up. Later I have a conversation with a friend who works at Ford and he tells me that the reman units come with cheap pip's or whatever it's called inside and they go bad easy. He told me the best thing to do would be to replace pip with a quality unit or get a new, not reman dizzy from Ford.
