New to Mustangs jumped into charged 5.0 build
New here and its my first mustang. Not new to builds but have been a GM guy. Anyway I just bought a 95 GT vert and a buddy of mine had a charger laying around from an old project he never finished, or started for that matter. Powerdyne 6psi blower. Need advise on heads, cam valvetrain for decent street fighter. Current mods are bbk longtubes, unknown h-pipe, borla catback, 70mm tb, unknown intake, solid motor mounts, upper and lower control arms, smog delete, ram 900 clutch, alum driveshaft, 3.73 gears and I believe it has a mild cam. As best as I know its the stock bottom end. (liability?) Looking for ~400 at the wheels or mid 11's. Dont care too much about the common definition of "streetable." Street duty is mostly going to be the drive to the track or nice weekends. Wanting to stay on the low end of the budget but sometimes good parts cost money. You guys know more about what combos work on these cars than i do so any help is appreciated. Also I do all my own work so any tips or tricks that might be specific to the 5.0 would be helpful.

You could opt for a complete top end kit from Trick Flow, Edelbrock, or Holley, or put one together yourself. Don't forget the excellent AFR 165 heads. My suggestion would be:
AFR 165 heads, Compcams XE270HR-14 cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM II intake, 1.6 roller rockers, and Vortech 8psi blower kit. If you want to save money you could go for GT40 heads and an Explorer intake instead but you'll also make less power (~400rwhp instead of ~460rwhp).

powerdyne charger was free. thats set in stone. i know theres a few better options but free is hard to beat. any idea how the combo mentioned by Bullit95 would fare on a stock bottom end? motor is already out of the car to tear down so now would be the time to find this out. the car has some miles so im already considering rebuilding it. but if it can handle a summer id rather do it next year and do a stroker. any thoughts on the rest of the valvetrain? or if the heads mentioned would be sufficent when it does go bigger? anyone else want to chime in?
also will the edelbrock intake clear the stock hood? |

Your free Powerdyne should do fine.
Since the motor is already out and you're going to pull the heads anyway, it would be easy enough to just freshen up the bottom end with new rings, bearings, and oil pump (with hardened pump shaft). If you're planning on building a blown stroker later on, I think you'd better start looking for a stronger aftermarket block to base it on. The stock block will probably crack under the potential 500+rwhp you'd get from a blown 331 (or 347). Also if you do take the stroker route you'll need bigger heads (e.g. AFR 185's or TFS 190cc Fast as Cast), cam (e.g. CompCams XE274HR-14, TFS 2), and intake (e.g. TFS R). The Edelbrock intake is taller than stock but it WILL clear the stock hood provided you DON'T insert an upper/lower spacer. |
