temp gauge sender location

I've done some searching thru old threads and can't seem to find where people are installing the sender for the water temp gauge. I installed mine in the left/back side of the block just under the exhaust manifold but the gauge will only read 250*. I know the engine isn't that hot so I'm wondering if maybe I should install the sender somewhere else or if the sender is bad. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rob

It goes in the intake manifold on the driver's side behind the distributor.
