Intermittent start problem

Hiya,

I am having a problem starting my car sometimes. The engine just turns over and doesn't start. I can hear the fuel pump prime and I believe its an electric fuel pump cause I can hear it when it runs.

I am not sure when the last time the car was tuned up. I haven't taken out the plugs yet or anything but the oil looks clean.

Few questions.

What type of plugs and wires should I use?
What type of oil should I use? My uncle said to use the Castrol GTX High mileage oil.
Where should I start trouble shooting?
My cousin has a 98 V6 and is having the same problem. His dad said to change the fuel filter and spark plugs.

I am thinking that it may be the igniter. (You know the coil thing that delivers spark to the dizzy.)

Any suggestions?

I am not looking to turn my car into a speed demon. I just want to keep it running good. Every other car I've owned i've dumped alot of money into with after market parts and stuff but I just want to keep this car stock and running GREAT. So please let me know what's up.

well i had the exact same thing and i found that my exhaust had melted my starter wire that connects from the motor of the starter to the soleniod....

ive also had my coil go out... spray starter fluid in the intake and see if it fires up then, if so its prolly your coil...

if not starter

more than likely

A bit more info is needed to help you make the correct diagnosis.

Such as?

Well... it doesn't matter if its cold or not. I don't think its the starter because the engine is turning over but not starting (Like actually running). It just turns over and over and over etc... If you try a few times then start it fires right up. Also I noticed sometimes when the car starts it like BARLEY starts. I.E. fires up at only like 2 or 3 hundred rpms then catches. I think its either the coil or fuel filter.

Does It Run Fine If You Spray Starter Fluid In The Intake Then Stall When It Runs Out

Sounds like you need a new fuel pump. Mine was doing the exact same thing until I finally broke down and replaced the pump. It's bleeding off pressure while it sits. Cycle the key to trigger the FP relay 3-4 times before you start it, if that helps it's the FP.
