Opinion about GT40 Crate Motor

I am considering a GT40 crate motor for my 95'GT because I'm not a very skilled mechanic and I live on a military base so I have limited space to work on my car, a crate motor is the best solution for all of these issues. I don't mind the extra price tag for having the convenience.

I'm curious on opinions of the various GT40 motors that are out there, and with so many companies making slightly different versions, it can be hard to choose.

I'm not going to the track, so anything making over 300hp is fine for me, I'm very conservative and not looking to achieve anything better than a mid 13 second 1/4 mile, you know, just enough balls to be able to wipe a smile or two off of someone on the highway, that's all. The only other mods to the car will be supporting ones, and decent suspension and drivetrain build (Cobra suspension upgrades and brakes, TCI AOD-E streetfighter with a mild stall and 4.10's out back) Maintain all emmisions and A/C.

I was considering the lower end GT40 motors that offer cast crank and stock rocker arms. I'm not supercharging and it will not be doing a whole lot of WOT. I have another mustang buildup in the future that will be the wild one.

I assume by GT40 crate motor, you mean the 302 with GT40 heads/intake, and not the supercharged, all-aluminum 5.4L used in the GT Supercar.

Depends on your budget. My opinion is that if you've got the space to do a motorswap, you've got the space to swap the top end. I think unless you have some reason you want to swap out your shortblock, getting something like the Trick Flow top end kit would do you better for similar time/money.

What "Cobra suspension" are you referring to? Cobras used the exact same control arms, and if the springs are a different rate, they're actually softer than GT springs (Ford called it "controlled compliance"). You're not gonna gain anything there, other than the brakes, which you've mentioned separately.

I wish I was referring to the 5.4 super motor, but no, just a pushrod 302 crate motor.

By cobra upgrades I was primarily referring to the typical suspension upgrades, but I did not realize that there was no major difference in cobra to GT suspensions. Thank you for clarifying this, I would have probably realized it eventuall when it came time to order parts and noticed the parts and specs were the same.

I was planning on a tubular K member, urethane everything and a nice rear suspension setup, control arms etc.

I know that I could save some money and get more power by getting my lower end rebuilt and doing my own cam/head combo, but as I mentioned, I have limited tools and space to work with, it would be too much, and a crate motor is too easy. I like convenience.

I can mate my tranny up to the new motor and install a complete drivetrain in a weekend!

Why would you need to rebuild your shortblock?

What specifically are you looking at suspension-wise? And I can't recommend subframe connectors enough; I like Maximum Motorsports, there's other good ones out there, too.

i wouldnt spend so much for a crate motor. it would probably net you moore power to money ratio to build what you have. A good head and intake swap with a very mild cam can get you to 300HP without much effort.

i just did my H/C/I swap and wish i had just built a 347 and swapped out the K member for a tubular...

Which k-member is next on my list.
