Gauge play

So recently I've been thinking the stang has been overheating but haven't been smelling any anti-freeze or anything. Now I'm thinking it's electrical. The other night I was driving to a restaurant and noticed it playing games. It would go from cold to hot (like normal) and then it would go down to halfway and then back to hot and then cold, back and forth.

Am I looking into something horrible?

How can I fix this and what are things to look for to make sure that my car isn't actually overheating?

first i would check to see if your thermostat is working properly. then check your radiator cap or just replace it if not sure

get an infrared thermometer (can get one at sears for like $30) and check the engine temp at the thermostat and the coolant temp sensor and compar to your gauge if it matches you have a problem if not its just the gauge being off maybe the cts or the gauge

My dad told me to take a flame to the thermostat to see if it opened up; guess they used to do that it they don't anymore. Would the one on my car do this? Or is that just old and outdated?

Quick question. Where should my thermostat needle be? I do believe my sender unit is messed up. It moves from just above cold to around O. I just changed my water pump hoses and thermostat.

our temp gauges are known for problems, accuracy is + or- 20 degree's at best, I switched to a autometer electric 4337 at 50 bucks, spot on accurate
