Heating during short rides

Here's the deal.. I live in Texas and my '94 is over heating like crazy.

I plan on replacing my stock radiator with a 3 row aluminum radiator. I currently have a Mach 1 fan in there but it pulls a lot of volts away (any fixes to keep this from doing it?) and I'm thinking about changing the fan for a flex fan.

What flex fans are good? How can I make the fan not drain so much power?

I've seen aluminum radiators time and time again fix heating problems on several cars so I'm hoping it'll do it for me.

Any other suggestions?

Does the engine overheat only on the highway, only at idle/slow traffic, or all the time?

It only seems to overheat when I'm in town; going through slow traffic (Lights and signs). Once I get on the highway it stays at a normal operating temperature.

Then it looks like your fan isn't pulling enough air. A flex fan won't solve your problem but a new electric fan from a '96-'98 model will.

Does the stock fan run constantly or only when temperature reaches a certain point?

This fan only runs when the engine gets hot or whenever the a/c is turned on.

The fan should run only when:

1. The AC is turned on (low speed on norm, high speed on max).
2. In low speed mode when the coolant temp. reaches 208*F.
3. In high speed mode when the coolant temp. reaches 228*F (near end of normal zone on gauge).

The fan should be on all the time. I battled cooling issues for years with my car. It got worse when I started road racing. Best thing to do is wire the fan so that it's on high speed all the time.

The fan doesn't need to be on all the time. Having it wired up like that will only shorten the life of the fan. The best way is to have it wired up with a fan controller to switch it on in low speed mode at about 15*F above t'stat opening temp., on in high speed mode at about 30*F above t'stat opening temp., and off at about 5*F above t'stat opening temp. This will allow the fan to switch on when you do need it and stay off when you don't.

If the fan was on constantly my battery would be dead and there's no way I could install an amp.

I need to know what the three wires are that hook up to the fan (ex: black-ground, yellow-power) for a 1994 gt.

If I can't get this fan operating properly by the time I get my radiator then I'll be getting a dual fan kit (actually, just the fans and make my own attachments). Is there any good brands? I don't need prices, just brands.
