lean really lean plaese help 331 stroker


its a 94 gt 331 stroker trickflow heads 30 lb injectors and granatelli maf i just started it tonight set timing 5 min later i got red hot cats and h pipe also could i have burnt my o2 sensors

i got a 90mm
air and the inlet tube is small (bbk) would that cause it mabey its not calibrated right

Were the headers red? What is your timing set at? Retarded ignition timing will do that because ignition is occuring close to or in the exhaust.

10 before tp dead center which is base im gona try c&l mass air 76mm i think the pos granatelli was to large for my cold air it jumped from 90mm to 70mm in 9inches venturey effect that might have been the problem

I have same problem


I have a 94 stock 302 that has the same problem. The cats and headers are glowing hot red/orange... Everyone told me my cats were clogged... Wrong... it is not an O2 sensor either. Mine was doing it on one side then the other.

This might sound stupid but make sure your spark plug wires are on all the way. If one is not on all the way or you have a bad spark plug the motor thinks it is running lean, because there is no cumbustion, so it trys to make up for it by dumping in more fuel. This causes the exhaust glow (esspecially at the cats) because they are burning all of the extra fuel that was dumped in there. That is what cats do.
Then, check the rest of the ignition, spark plug gapping, cap and rotor, it could be anything. I just did all of this tonight too btw.
I saw that once I replaced all of the above, only my hearders glow orange. so that means I have made progress.
BTW, lean would not make it glow at all. You are running rich.
Also, If you are high Ideling like I am, then you are for sure rich.
My prob now is that the fuel mixture is computer controlled and you cannot adust it or the idle. (It says so on the bottom of the hood).

one last note: test the injectors... they should show between 11 and 18 ohms. or may about 22ohms if you have bigger injectors. any more and they are for sure bad.

im having some what of the same problem


hey guys this is my first time joining a sight and the reason i joined this one is cus everytime i need a question answered the guys on hear seem to know everything lol. i have a 90 gt, it has headers catted x pipe and mac dumps, ac and smog delete as well as underdrive pulleys, an e 303 cam new lifters new rockers but with stock springs and push rods. i just finished the cam install the other day i fired it up and set it to about 12* of timing and began the break in process. about three or four minutes in my passenger side header begins to glow red and since there's more light on the driver side its hard to tell but i am pretty sure its probably glowing as well, obviously i shut it down and let it cool off, i think it's because its dangerously lean?? but why ??? i then retarded the timing to make it run richer but it seems to idle best and be most responsive at 12 degree and even wen i retard the timing it doesn't fix the lean issue i'm having. is this because it's running lean??? wat can i do to fix this?? i no plenty of guys out there run this set up with stock fuel pump and stock injectors so why am i having problems???? one more note...it seems like the header starts glowing from the rear and works up to the front.
