MAF sensor problem

got in the parking garage at work and car starting idling really bad. i unhooked the MAF sensor and adjusted throttle body and car idles fine. took it to my friends shop and found out that the actuall sensor is bad that sits ontop of the MAF housing. (ive cleaned it and everything) what is this sensor called and where can i find it? everyone says i have to buy a whole new MAF is this true? and with this being unhooked is it bad for the car? everyonce and a while when i start it car will idle all weird and start to smoke im hoping this is the issue with that if not damn it

It's the mass airflow sensor and yes, you can buy it separately from the housing.
