Is you car manual or automatic? Either way, the best starter mod is a 3.73 rear axle gear swap. It'll feel like you've added an extra 80hp right off the bat.
You could visit my homepage and find out what freebie and weight reduction mods are possible on our Stangs.

If you don't know the car's service history, you'd be well advised to do the following:

1. Replace plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and fuel filter.
2. Clean the MAF sensor.
3. Clean the EGR valve.

Looks like you got yourself a project in the making. A shifter was one of the first things that I did with my car. The stock one is a POS, very rubbery feel to it. Exhaust is always nice to get the sound your looking for while you save up for the more expensive mods.

Gears, exhaust, under drive pulleys, advance timing. Those four things are a good start and great foundation to build on.

If it was a Fox or an SN95 vert, I'd agree with you but they're not necessary at such an early stage on an SN95 coupe.

A great and cheap way to get more power is get yourself a set of gt-40 iron heads from someone. $400 is the average going rate for them. Get them freshened up with new seals and springs if not already done and slap them on. The only modification needed to make them work is getting the rite head bolts for them. Since they are a 351 based heads they have larger holes for larger bolts. You can go about this 2 ways. Either get step washers, which is the way I went, or get the bolts designed for this swap. They'll have a large body to fill in the bigger hole but the same smaller size thread to bolt into the block. Step washers is the cheaper way to go.

While your at it or even later down the road you can get yourself a new intake (upper/lower). You can find one specifically for the 94-95 or you can use an intake designed for the 93 older cars. When using the older intakes you'll need to also get an elbow adapter because the 94-95's have a 45 degree type turn on the front of the upper intake and the 93 older don't. By using an adapter on the older intakes the throttle body ends up in the same place allowing you to reconnect everything back the same way.

biggest bang for your buck at this stage will be rear end gear, bump up timing, exhaust and a cold air intake...

+1 is that what the guy that sold it to you said? A lot of people like to make things sound like more than they are, like he put a set of shocks on from NAPA and now when he sells it he says full racing suspension cause the box the shocks came in said "racing" If you can find out whats done to the suspension that would be great so we could help you from that point, also cam and crank? Don't understand why he would replace either of those, see if you can ask him what cam it has, and more on why he changed the crank? good luck,

timing is a definite plus... and if u can get nitto 555 tires or drag radials. putting power to the ground is important

yea u hear alot about CUSTOM blah blah or racing this or that, look up what control arms are and see if it has upper and lowers or subframe connectors or coilovers or bump steer kit. while down there check to see if u have an aluminum driveline and a upgraded differential cover with maybe bigger axles. check for leaks and the bolts for ur lower control arms, mine snapped in half yesterday scared the shit outta me. and check ur ujoints cheap fix and important.

u said ur dads a mecanic and stuff so flush your trans fluid, radiator fluid, run good synthetics (motocraft, mobile 1,amsoil,royal purple) for motor oil. get a new oil filter (preferably Wix but others work) change differential fluid and add i lil bit of friction modifier to it.
