5.0 and only 215 hp.....what's up with that?

yeah I know, you guys already know that but my last mustang was a 01 cobra and I got spoiled but come on....215hp that's lame. I didn't buy the car to drag race but I think it has a lot of hp that needs to be woke up.

I think I'll buy a used 5.0 from the auto wreaking yard and make a fun project with the boys and I. They've never built a motor before, it should be fun. I was just wondering what heads would be a good bang for the buck? I would think a good low to mid range cam would be the way to go. I like a low end torqey motor. Any advice guys?

Yes. But later model explorers with the same motor had gt40 intakes as well.
I'm pretty sure the low HP has to do with emission laws, etc. at the time. You can get a lot of power off of simple bolt ons. Underdrive pulleys, intake, exhaust, CAI. Hell, even just removing the intake silencer gives a few more HP.

Lets not forget that the chevy 5.0 (305) turnes out less than 185~hp in stock form.

Oh it most certainly does. You can get it up to 300 crank HP (260rwhp) with just simple bolt-ons and GT40 heads/intake. The GT40P heads from the '97.5+ Explorer would be even better and you can find them for ~$300 in ebay.
With bolt-ons and a Trick Flow top end kit, you can easily crack 360 crank HP (310rwhp).

If you are going to buy a used 5.0 from the salvage yard, just go ahead and pick one up out of a late 90's explorer, then you will have the gt40P heads, intakes, and all you will need to do is change the cam.

Otherwise if you really want some power you can go the route I went and go with a 347 stroker, if you really want to churn out some ponies. FordStrokers.com 331-347-408-418-427 Custom Built Small Block Ford Engines builds some nice short blocks and longblocks, You could get a 347 rotating assembly from Jim @ strokers and then top it with the trick flow top end, ditch the cam, and get a custom grind. All depends on how fast and how much $$$$
