Overheating help please!!

Hey guys, new to the forum but I have a modified 95 vert 5.0
Had new head gasket and internal gaskets felpro redone.. RPM heads, U&L intake.. new radiator fan.. radiator hose.. and radiator cap installed.

Car has been stored but recently took it out a few times and this is what I'm experiencing... let the car warm up get to about 180 temp so coolant enters the block, start to drive it and all of a sudden the temp gauge rockets up to about 3/4 and when it does this the heat in the car goes cold as if the A/C was on... popped the hood and the upper radiator hose was cold still..so I killed the car waited about 10 minutes started it up and the heat was normal and Upper hose was warm coolant was flowing and car ran normal for the duration... Just today i started it up and it did the same thing once the temp hit about 180.. so I killed the car again waited about 10 minutes or so.. was still skyrocketing up to 3/4 and heat was still ice cold when i drove it.. popped the hood and now there is a slight drip of coolant coming from the radiator cap.. is it not holding the pressure?? HELP much appreciated

was told it could be a sending unit went bad? or bad cap?

Sounds like the water pump/thermostat is going out. Does the fan kick on when it starts to get hot?

Well my mechanic wired up a relay so that the fan kicks on as soon as i start my car and doesnt shut off until i turn the car off.. this is only temporary until i can get a new module for the fan to kick on at the right temp, but have had no problems since summer when he did it.. until now.

Something similar to that was on my car some years ago. It overloaded the electricity to the fan and the fan would shut off because of it and caused my car to overheat.

You may have an air pocket but I don't think its the root of the problem. Just run the A/C for a few minutes then switch it to heat for a few minutes. This will get rid of the air pocket effect. If the coolant drops significantly, then you had an air pocket. If it doesn't and still overheats, I'm still betting its the water pump and/or thermostat.

Did this start right after you had head gaskets installed. If it did then the head gaskets were installed wrong. That will cause the same issue.

It could be an air pocket but I think it is more likely to be a water pump. BTW most of the time if a thermostat goes out it usually sticks open and doesn't overheat.

That sounds like you have a bad thermostat AND a bad radiator cap. Both are cheap to replace so I suggest you do that, and burp the system as the others have suggested.

Good call. I agree it looks hideous. I prefer the spoilerless look myself, and the weight saving is useful too.

hahaha the ricer spoiler was on there when i bought the car and since i put all my money at the moment into rebuilding the engine... thats a concern that will be fixed down the road lol and to s35s post, no it didnt start happening right after head gaskets were installed probably about 6 months later out of no where it happened...
but so far what i have done since its to cold and not garaged just underneath a car port, is just burped the system and tried swapping the ac to heat a few times as john said that may help... so next step im gonna take is to replace the water pump, new thermo, and radiator cap and flush my system... should fix the problem

appreciate everybody that has replied with info. THANK YOU.
