water temp

what is a good way to find out if your water temp gauge is bad. My car has the stock gauge and it gets up past the a or normal but when I test the water it reads around 185. When I'm driving the car it stays around the middle of norm but at idle it will move up and also moves up when I take up out of first and once I get it moving it will go down. Any ideas on whats going on. Thanks in advance.
