A '94-'95 AODE from another Mustang, 2WD 5.0 Explorer, or 2WD 5.0 F150 will go straight in. Alternatively, you could modify a 4R70W from a '99-'04 V6 Mustang to make it work.

Always a good opportunity for a 5 speed swap as well! I've gotten it done for around 500 bucks before. I have a thread on stangnet with a complete swap if you wanna see what's involved.

Otherwise get a 4R70W or go home! AODE's are slush boxes and really have no business in a performance car.

what would you have to do to modify the 4R70W?

If you do a google search there is tons of info for hours of reading. I just did a search and there is a Stangnet thread that explains everything you have to swap.

Also, the "guru" I'm finding on this subject is Don at SCT X3 LiveWire Dyno Performance Chips LaSota Racing Ford Tuning Index

Give him a shout!

Not a lot but Don Lasota will know the full skinny. IIRC you'll need to keep your existing '94-'95 wiring harness, shift solenoids, tailhousing, and add extra clutches to the 3.8 V6 4R70W to give it the same holding power as a 4.6 V8 version. The reason you need the 3.8 V6 tranny is that the bellhousing bolt pattern matches the 5.0. The tranny from a 4.6 won't work.

Yes, the AODE tail housing will need to swap over to use the yoke you have.
Yes, you need the RF-F2 ford part number 92-95 TCC (torque converter clutch solenoid)
You can rewire, but the simple solution is to buy a new SS (shift solenoid pack) for the 92-95, and use that in your 98+ trans. Use your 94 internal wire harness and swap it over. The TCC mentioned above only accepts WIRE harness, your 98+ 4R has a PCB style harness and will not clip into the 92-95 TCC.
Also your EPC solenoid (electronic pressure solenoid) will need to be swapped as well from your 94 (or get new) into the 98+ trans to use your old harness.
^^
That is way easier than fighting the re wire proccess.
So in short, take out the EPC, TCC, SS from your 98+ trans, swap in 92-95 RF-F2 ford parts number solenoids, use your old 94 internal wire harness, done. This leaves you with a new trans, with old style solenoids, done.

We can work this scenario around many ways.
There is like 5 ways to do this swap. Another simple way is using a 92-95 TCC, CUT THE SHROUD off the connector so the 98+ PCB internal wire harness will connect to it, then rewire the car connector.
I attached the rewire diagram.

Thank you,

This is exactly what I did, and it worked perfectly. Just make sure you have the right speedo gear
