first time at track...tips?
So i'm going to be taking my 94 gt to the track in a bout a month or so and i was just wondering if theres any tips you guys had? what RPM to launch from best shift points etc. Its my first time so i'm not really sure the best way to go about things. My mod list is short throw, 410 gears, new ford racing clutch, x pipe to flowmasters, new front 04 cobra control arms, rear control arms, sub frame connectors, lowering coils, CAI, u/d pullies, MSD dist. cap and rotor, new wires, street fire coil and fuel filter. (i have yet to figure out how to put this in my sig lol). And i'm installing TFS TW heads soon. Thanks for the advice!

practice launching... spin the tires for a couple seconds to clean em off if your running street tires. and figure out what rpm, how hard to let off the clutch and haw fast you can get to full throttle without spinning. You want to launch as hard as possible with minimum wheelspin.

Drag racing is 90% about the launch/controlling wheel spin. The rest is not missing gears and not short shifting to get the maximum power out of the run.
After you get the launch down, set your shift points in your mind. Since you don't have heads or intake work done, I would say 5200-5500rpm would be the best shift point. Possibly even lower with the 4.10 gears. The trick is to get the best pull from the previous gear, and land somewhere in the peak torque range of the next, 3300~rpm or so.

you have to play with your burn outs too cause some tires like to burn the hell out of them for good traction some only need a slight spin or you will grease them up and they wont hold for shit
first you roll up and stop at the begining edge of the water stop put it in first gear and give it a real slight spin of the tires this initial spin will clean all the rocks off the tires. then allow the car to roll up so your tires are actualy out of the water (you dont want to do the burn out in standing water because the water will spray up around the wheel well and then drop water on the track and onto your own tires) and put the transmission into 2nd and dump the clutch and then move quickly to the brake to hold the car and bring it to 5000 rpm and while holding the throttle steady when you see the rpms begin to drop this will be when the tires have the most grip so let off the brake and keep your foot on the gas and let it roll out of the box then make sure you stop before the lights. ok now take a breather before you even pre-stage the car (i have blown a few drag races where i got too jumpy or too excited after 2 or 3 rounds ) then what i like to do since none of the drag strips that i go to have level ground in the lights i end up rolling out so i set the parking brake at 3 clicks enough to keep the car from rolling but not to slow the car down. then i roll up and pre-stage the car. and slowly bring up the revs to 2k rpms and then use the clutch to roll the car into full stage at this point you wont have long till the tree drops you want to let out on the clutch when you first see the last amber light first comes on. and then shift at approx 5000 or 5500 rpm. and its just that easy some tracks require courtesy staging this is when both cars have to prestage before one car can stage and keep a record of all your time slips and every thing that you do diffrent on any one run make sure you make a note of like my car likes to spin the tires off the line (i went out second round last week because i didnt realize that my car would go .5 sec faster spinning the tires off the line ) i highly reccomend going on a amatuer night where you can run all the time trial runs you want to try all diffrent things any questions just ask if i dont know i can find out my gf and her father both drag race too |
