S197 steering wheel in an sn95

I want to put an '05 or newer steering wheel in my '94 GT. I know, or at least I'm pretty sure I lose my air bag but I'm ok with that. I don't want to relocate my cruise control though. Will I be able to re-wire the newer steering wheel to work with the factory cruise control? Can it be done? Has anyone done it?

It won't even fit so don't bother. I wanted to do the same thing but found out it's a no go, so I bought a cheap aftermarket steering wheel and adapter boss instead. This is how it looks:

I'm not keen on the Type R center horn button but I'm going to find a way to change it to a Mustang pony instead.

You can't buy an adapter to make it work? That is really dissapointing!

I've never seen it done but that doesn't mean it can't be. If you have fabrication skills and the tools to do it then it can be done. And if you don't someone does. I'm a fabricator and welder so I know all I have to do is think up the idea and then make it happen. Money and time plays a role of course. I recently helped a buddy fit a racing steering wheel into his car. The damn thing was suppose to bolt rite in but it seemed like it was the wrong parts. Rather then wait for new parts I made it all work with some cutting here and welding there.

As far as wiring goes you can just have the same wires run to the new buttons on the s197 wheel right? or is it more complicated than that?

I think it's more complicated than that. AFAIK the S197 wheel also has buttons for adjusting stereo volume and tuning radio stations.

With an aftermarket stereo, id be surprised if that part wouldnt be as simple as just getting the right harness for the stereo. I could certainly be wrong though.

I don't remember off the top of my head what system ford uses in those cars, but almost every set-up for steering wheel controls is different. They are all, as far as I know, a data or can-bus signal. There's not seperate wires for each button on the wheel, they all generally go through one or two wires and each button sends a different signal through those wires. You need a box to receive and interpret those wires, and they're going to be different between your car and an s197. It definitely won't be as simple as just hooking up the wires.

Well, I'll just have to figure it out as I go. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it regardless, but it would suck to lose my cruise control. I can see the speeding tickets now....

I have a simple solution for that. Just connect the cruise control wires to your right foot so that when you go over the speed limit, the system passes a small current into your foot forcing you to lift off.

My foot would just get numb at some point, and then I'd have nothing to stop me..... lol
