new guy

Hey, hows it going! My name is david, live in portland, or.. Just picked a sn95 gt. I have owned a 99 v6, and foxbody 4cyl and other cars. I sold my 99 5 years ago for a sportbike, been riding year round ever since so its gonna be hard to get used to the somewhat sluggish acceleration from cars (i can easily do 0-150-0 in under 20 sec). This year things starting working out for my wife and i so i figured we could afford another car and keep my bike since its a ss built 05 gsxr750k5, well, another toy for me lol.. since i am die hard ford, (she has a focus and had a f150) it was pretty obvious to me that i was getting another stang. I love their lines, sound, appeal, power, everything. I had always wanted a fox 5.0 but i couldnt find a nice enough notch for my picky self and saw this 95 and wanted it immediately. yeah, its not perfect, got a good deal on it and its on a pretty fresh rebuild, well under 15k since rebuild.

heres the details of the car:

95 GT 5 spd
Cold air intake
headers,h-pipe, not sure
pulleys
msd ignition
cobra 9in rims 245fr/275rw
not sure on what heads, the intake man. looks stock
not sure if its a stock cam, doesnt sound like other gts when i pull up to lights but that could be the exhaust setup, im gonna go looks under her today or tomorrow and see what kind of exhaust it has
The car was very well taken care of, interior is 9/10, engine bay 8/10, rims 10/10 (look brand new)

she accelerates pretty good, no hickups, smooth all the way to redline, shifts smooth, havent really pulled past third yet, on public roads, i save those speeds for the track. anyways, what kind of power do you guys think im making, how can i tell what kind of heads i have without removing the cover? Are there any tuners/chips i can get a few ponies out of? can i do a bigger tire than 275 with my rims? what kind of mpg do you guys get? I have a slight cold start problems, i remember reading something about cleaning something, where is this piece and what does it look like? link to thread?

Anyways, love the site, been going through past threads, catching up, learning. cant wait to learn more and see what i can do to her.

That is pretty clean! Nice find. If you have a stock intake manifold I'm going to guess that the heads are stock too. Easiest way to tell the heads apart. I wouldn't worry about it

The cold start problem is common for the sn95s. Honestly, I don't think they put a big enough battery from the factory in our cars...
My 1994 s-10 blazer v6 had a MUCH more powerful battery.

Take some good pics under the engine bay. Close-ups of the heads/headers. We will easily be able to identify if they are stock or not.

As for the cam/sound, were you comparing the sound to a 94/95' mustang or a 96-98'? 94-95 were the last years of the 5.0. 96-98' they switched to the sohc 4.6l which has a notably different sound. You can tell the difference by the taillights. 96-98' had vertical tail lights.

As for chips go..with the lack of variable cams and a limited ECU system, they only really help AFTER you do some mods such as a H/C/I upgrade. I wouldn't waste my money on one if all your car has is exhaust and pulleys.

great advise, thanks! im planning on getting some gt40p heads/intake for christmas or my birthday.. I will take some close ups of the exhaust in the next few days.. I just didnt want to right now with this awesome pnw rain.

as far as the cam, yeah, im comparing to 94 95, the last year for the 5.0 was my main reason for looking at them.. I am not a fan of the tuner engines, well my wallet isnt.. I see a few people in my area with the same car. i also test drove over a dozen of this year alone. this one seems like a deeper rumble, more glug glug glug than a smoother idle that i was feeling in 100% stock motor 95's.

should i be using supreme gas or plus?
should i get a different battery?
if a pulley is squeeling lightly, can i wd40 it?

Usually when people say they are "new" I assume they know little to nothing about cars. I'm glad you show some form of intelligence.
You may have a mild cam upgrade, such as a E303. Watch some videos on youtube and compare the sound to yours.

Unless you are running a lower timing or having pre-detonation/knocking issues, then no. 87 octane is recommended via the car manual. I run mid-grade or premium at least once a month though.

If your current battery is old/cheap brand then yes. Batteries usually come with a sticker that has the purchase date on it. Gold series batteries (can't think of the particular brand name, my mom's van has one in it.) and Optima batteries are excellent upgrades.

WD40 may help...that stuff mainly just dilutes water. I would pick up a can of lithium grease. (like $2 at walmart, comes in a big red can near wd40) Spray as close to the pulley as possible with the red extender tube. A little bit comes a long way with that stuff. Used it on my ball joints before I had them replaced. Great stuff.
