Question About Thermostat Housing Gasket

I have a bit of a leak coming from the thermostat housing so I decided to change the gasket, the first one I bought was really thin and still leaked after the install, got a new one today made of cork and hoping it will do the trick, the question is, should I apply RTV silicone as well or will that damage the gasket? Also I plan on lightly sanding the mating surfaces to ensure they're both clean and flat.

Yes, make sure you get all dirt/debris off of the surface. Applying RTV around the gasket will not hurt anything at all. In fact, I did that the last time I changed my thermostat on my 01' and I haven't had any problems at all.

Also one side of the gasket is a stick on type so like a sticker, should I apply RTV on that side or no?

No need to, what I did was put the gasket on the thermostat like normal and tightened the bolts, then I went around they faying edge with the RTV.

I usually apply a thin layer, it helps keep the gasket in place while installing. If both surfaces are clean it will seal fine without.

Use brake clean on mating surfaces to remove oil coolant residue. Sanding housing on flat surface to remove imperfection and sanding with block on intake will help to seal. I use Fel Pro gasket. If using rtv, do so sparingly. No need for restriction from excess.

Good point. I've seen many jobs done with excess silicone squished out the sides of the surface. My own Mustang had a leaky differential because someone used RTV like it was glue. When I do a gasketed surface, I spread it thin like mayo.
