5.0 Swap

Hi guys,
I am still new to the forums, so bear with me. Anyways, I've had my 04 v6 for a year now and I love it, but I dont love the power. Ive added bolt ons, but I now think that spending money on an 8 would be more sensible than adding these bolt ons. Sure some say just go buy an 8, but this car is special to me. Recently, I befreinded someone who has done 20+ swaps, countless turbos, and even built a factory five cobra. He wants to help me do a swap eventually and I plan to buy a wrecked 94-95 gt with the 5.0L for the swap. I have one in mind with a rebuilt tranny, full exhaust and multiple other bolt ons. I researched for months and this seems to be the best way to go about doing it. I am just looking to see what I would need from the donor car for my car. I know the main things, but the small things is what I need to know. I am on a limited budget, but could get a donor car for around 500. also would everything from the 94 fit on the 04? I am looking to learn from this expirence and may even pass it off as a school project. I was thinking maybe switching everything, the motor and tranny, computer, wiring, and maybe even the rear end. we have a lift, an engine hoist and all the tools, I'm just wondering is this particular swap the sensible thing to do, and what is it that I need from the old car.

If your friend is all knowing as he is (and I'm not being sarcastic) and you have your money and some time then go for it if you get a donor car you have won half the battle the rest is just pacients, take ur time. With the donor car you have everything .....its just a matter of oh this goes there so this must go over hear

gl man !! sounds fun, green will be in sooner or later and help alot. He done like 351 swap or some shit.

I def say do it. Ignore the "oh the 5.0 only had like 205hp and our V6 has 190'' BS comments that people make. HP is just a damn number. People still haven't learned that based on 'hondas' by now though ... the difference in power curve, and tq is huge! Parts are everywhere for them. And its a simple plat form to work on (as is our V6) but you'll enjoy camming and doing some intakes on a 302 that put you well over the 250ish whp N/A limit.

As for the info your 04 rear is wider than a 94-98 I believe. so you might need spacers or a 99+ 8.8.

If you are going fuel injection then get a 94-95 donor car(If you can find one for dirt cheap). I figured if I am going to throw a 5.0 in I would just do a 351w swap since it is essentially the same motor. I then bought a stroker crank and it is a 393 lol.

It all depends on your budget to be honest. The hardest part for me to find seems to be the 94-95 bellhousing and input shaft for my world class t5 transmission. Getting a donor car you will not run into this issue.

I read that you are asking about the rearend. the 94-98 rearends are 1-2 inches more narrow than our 99-04s

I'm going to do the same thing man! I am looking for a donor car at the moment. I have just been watching cl but as soon as it warms up some I'm gonna hit the junk yards and see what I can find. I have heard it shouldn't be to hard, I actually have a thread about it on here. I'm pretty excited to get mine going. If you can afford it, I would definitely see if your friend could help you do some internal work on the engine. I plan on doing that to my 5.0 sooner or later. Probably later though

This would be more suitable for the 5.0 guys to answer for you since you won't have a v6 in the bay anymore.

Thanks guys, I'm still in high school and need to complete a senior project, and I think I've found the perfect one. Its all a matter of money though. (Its not a bad deal, this senior project, I get to leave school three months early to work on my car lol) I really want to learn stuff like this, being my first car its a little ambitious, but I think if I can learn early I can do other swaps and bigger things. Yeah my friend has had 4 302's in his garage at once for his FF...lol. I just want something easy and cheap that will help me learn something, hopefully I can find a decently cheap donor car...

well your first big step is deciding if you want EFI or carb.

Then type, hydrolic roller, flat tappet ... that kinda stuff

Personally, nothing against carbs, but I wont go with them unless its maybe a pure race car.

In your case id go with a 94-5 GT 5.0 set up if it were me. But its all up to you man.

But I will say this be carefull turning wrenches and learning on your DD. I did that and didn't have my DD for 6 months ... one project failed and I tore the engine out and did a build instead of sticking with what I had is the reason it took so long. But still, always have a spare you can count of if your gonna start playing with shit...

1994 Ford Mustang GT
Found this, dont know if its too far gone but ill have to check it out. rebuilt tranny is a plus. Though I may just buy from a local junkyard where Ive found some 94s in the range of $350-450.

if you get the donor car your golden all you have to do is strip the harness out of the 94 the k member unless your getting a tubular one and the engine trans rad you may be able to make the fuel lines on your car work keep your rear and just regear it the exhaust will work from the 94 and of course the comp

I did this swap on my 99 last year. Here's a how to thread I made: Project: Swapping 94 Gt drivetrain to 1999 V6 Vert chassis | Mustang Forums at StangNet

I have a thread on this site too but it's not as detailed as the on I linked above. My swap only took a couple weeks, it's basically just remove and replace. The only wiring I had to splice was for the electric seat believe it or not.

All in all my project turned out nice! I love it when people don't believe me that there's a 5.0 sitting in the car and I get to show them! If you have any questions I'll be glad to help.
