first mods: camshaft and heads. need advice!

i am ready to start modifying my 95 GT, it's already got flowmasters but that doesn't really do anything except make it sound sexier. i was wondering what you guys would recommend for cam and heads upgrade.

i also want to get 3.73 rearend installed. i figure these 3 mods should help out a fair amount, and then i can do more stuff to the car in the future.

i just don't really know anything about cam/heads, and want to know what type of each would be best for my car. i really have to do something, a stock 95 is pretty underpowered imo.

The most important thing to remember when doing a head/cam swap is that a corresponding tune will have to be done in order for it to run correctly. The 94/95 computers do not like mods at all as they have stricter parameters than the earlier foxes.

There are so many head/cam combinations out there that it is hard to be wrong. AFR 165 are great heads. TFS Twisted Wedge are great (i have these on my car). Even the Edelbrock Performer heads are good. I recommend that you have a plan on where you want you car to be performance wise and then put the pieces of the puzzle together. Heads, cam, intake, throttle body, MAF, exhaust, tune, etc. And lastly and probably most important, don;t forget about the suspension. With increased power, you are going to need increased traction to use it.

thanks for the info. i always hear good things about AFR. i also heard that putting a larger cam in the engine without putting upgraded heads to allow for more flow can actually cause you to lose power. is that true?

just curious, becuase i'll probably have to do these mods one at a time... can't afford to get it done all at once.

Changing the cam without swapping the heads will not necessarily make you lose power, but it will definately change the power curve. While the cam is essential in making the most effecient power possible for a given combination, it is not a requirement in making good, usable power.

I have TFS Twisted Wedge heads on my car now with the stock cam. I have excellent low and mid range torque and the good upper rpm power. A change in cam profile would definately help in making more power/torque, especially in the higher rpm range.

I fully understand the money situation, as I to have felt that pinch. Trust me when I say this, get whatever head/cam/intake combo you want and install it all at once. You may have to wait a little longer to do it, but it will be well worth the wait. In the mean time, have 3.73 gears installed. If you havent upgraded your headers and h-pipe, do that. You will feel a huge difference in performance with these simple, proven mods.

I would personally look around on www.corral.net ...maybe find some good stuff cheap...Just research what you are buying and COMMUNICATE with the seller...

It'd make alot of sense to do an Intake upgrade as well while your at it, but that again involves bigger TB, Mass air, etc. if you want to do it right.

3:73s or possibly 4:10s will wake it up quite a bit... look into a short throw shifter like the Steeda Tri-Ax, Pro 5.0, or MGW as well

yeah, actually i think i am going to do gears and headers/h-pipe first and then worry about heads/cam after that. gears are nice and cheap, and i know an awesome GM certified mechanic who gives me great deals. he's a family friend and knows his stuff.

i am still deciding whether to get 3.73 or 4.10. my dad got 3.73s installed on his 89 mustang 5.0 vert. it made a huge difference immediately. not sure if 4.10s are too much, i don't want overkill because it's my daily driver.

and it has 134,xxx miles right now, would it be a good idea to get a bearing kit with the gears and replace that too?

oh, and what kind of cam specs should i be looking for? i don't want something so extreme that the will die when idling, just a moderate upgrade.

yep, get the rebuild kit with the gears as well...I have 4:10s and love em...I dont commute everyday, hence why i wish i had actually gone with 4:30s! lol

Look at a cam like a TFS stage 1. I think you'll like the specs of that one.

As far as the gears go, i was told that 4.10 aren't really needed (if every day driver). the 3.73's would do just fine. But then again it's all up to you and what you want out of the car. I personally have 2.73's and plan on goin up to the 3.73's. Depending on what you have, you will notice a massive difference.

When my Cobra was still stock with the exception of the exhaust, the first gears I installed were 3.73's. Huge difference. I ended up shattering that rearend at the track and went with 4.10 the next time around. I picked up a little over a tenth in the 1320 with MPH staying about the same. Now with the heads and other things I have done, I run out of gear at the top end of the track due to the 26" tall tires. For a daily commuter, I recommend going with 3.73's.
