smell of antifreeze

when i stop driving and stop the car i get a smell of antifreeze outside of the car. also i get the smell inside of the car when i turn on the heater. i think the smell inside of the car when i turn on the heater is the heater core. what could make the smell outside of the car. thanks

sounds like the heater core like you said.
it could also be a cracked intake manifold.

Do you notice the sound of water hitting hot exhaust when you get out? If you do then it could be coming from here: look straight down from where the heater hoses go into the firewall you'll notice a black plastic tube coming out from the firewall. This is where the heater core will drain from if you have a leak--it's also where your AC gets rid of the humidity it takes out of the air.

It could be an intake problem as HMUSN posted earlier--I've had that problem too Altough I doubt it would be cracked (4.6 plastic intake problems)--more like loose bolts/bad gaskets.

The smell of antifreeze inside the car with the heater on is most likely your heater core. Changed mine a couple of years ago and it took quite a few hours to replace. Might be something you want to take in and have done unless you own a shop or it is not your primary driven car as it is very involved as you have to take the dash off to get to it and I also took out the center console, dropped the steering wheel shaft and the passenger seat to gain access (at least on the 87-93 fox bodies).

Well I was using a Mustang 5.0 Projects book (by Mark Houlahan) which had a step-by-step how-to on how to do it (with pictures no less) and told to do just what I did. Where or what info do you have to do it a different way?

i ususaly just go and do it, i know on the tempo it took some finess but i was able to do it with out removing anything except the heater core cover and the core its self. maybe the fox u have to drop the dash but that seemed like alot of work. the other 2 i did were on a gmc sierra 1500 and they were gravy to do right under the dash nothing in the way.

but verify its not a intake or head gasket leak or a bad hose before you replace the heater core.

Agreed, but I believe you have to drop the dash. I was also changing the dash at that time anyways as I wanted to switch out my red one for a black one and really didn't question the technique at the time, or I probably would have for sure as it really was a lot of work and that is something I try to avoid!
