2nd gear popping out...

I just joined the site, had a question about my tranny. My 2nd gear is popping out pretty frequently lately. I'm thinkin its the syncs but any ideas on it. Also would it be better for me to just buy a rebuild kit and do it myself or just buy a rebuilt one, or even possibly maybe a 6spd setup. thanks any input will help.

I'd buy a rebuilt one, i just brought my tranny to my transmission guy and he said it costs more to rebuild a t-5 than to buy a rebuilt tranny. If you do, stay away from Rebuilt manual transmissions, transmission parts they sent me a fox body tranny which has a 5/8" shorter input shaft than our 95 GT's. if you do order a rebuilt tranny, make sure you stress that you need the longer input shaft and the 94 -95 bearing retainer. most rebuild companys just send a tranny from a mustang 5.0 not paying attention to those small details, and good luck buddy. i feel your pain, been through shearing an input shaft on my tranny and my car is on jackstands right now for the next 3 weeks.

check 4th gear and reverse..if it does in those gears its DEFINITELY synchros..but either way its most likely synchros..dont try and rebuild it yourself..buy a rebuilt one..Promotion has a cobra upgraded for just around 850 with carbon fiber synchros and all new internals..they build nice tranny's..if you switch to a 6sp, you need a new bellhousing, driveshaft, and i believe a new clutch..im pretty sure the t-56 comes with 36 spline input shaft..

Worn synchros usually cause difficult engagement of the gears and grinding. Your problem is most likely worn check balls or selector forks. The only cure is to rebuild the transmission, but you could use this as an opportunity to upgrade by replacing it with a new stronger tranny.

+1 send him a PM on here. He is very good with prices and can build you one to suit your application... plus he uses the money he makes to build his mustang, so really, its win win.
