3rd gear grinding

So. I got a problem. I have a 95 gt, 196,XXX on the odometer.
For about the First five minutes or so after start up, my car will grind when I shift into third. Once its in, its fine, no problems. But i can go back out, then into, and it'll grind again. Its only with third gear. After awhile, its gone. and only happens after its started. Then it'll stop.

Any ideas whats wrong????

Sounds to me like you have a worn 3rd gear synchromesh. The symptoms are invariably worse when the gear oil is still cold and thick.

How may i fix this problem, and is it expensive?

also, how hard would it be to fix this myself?

if you could explain what the synchromesh is, that would help too. if you dont mind.

Unless you're expert at rebuilding manual trannies, I suggest you have it done by a specialist professional. It's not diffucult to fix, but it's also easy to screw up if you don't know what you're doing.
The synchromesh is what helps the gears to engage smoothly without grinding when you depress the clutch pedal. Here's a good explanation:

Just describe the symptoms to your local repair shop and see if they agree with the diagnosis of a worn synchro. Your tranny will need a full rebuild anyway especially with 196k miles on it, and the high cost of a rebuild might make it more economical to just replace it with a new tranny. This might also be an opportunity to upgrade to a stronger tranny.

Jesus.......I don't have money to really buy a new tranny, and Im selling this car at the end of the summer anyways......the tranny actually feels fine. Its been really smooth, shifts lnice and clean, up until this 3rd gear incident. You still think i should?

I've seen how our transmission specialist rebuilt a transmission once. Some parts have to be pressed into place.

Since you're going to sell the car anyway and the symptoms from the tranny aren't that bad, you might as well leave it alone and soldier on.

I probably will, just change out my tranny fluid and all. How much would it cost to get the 3rd synchro fixed btw?

a shop probably wont just replace the 3rd gear synchros... they will have to order the full rebuild kit and replace them all. besides, the chances are, if you just replace the one, a second one will go out shortly after look on ebay for tranny's or look around for a wrecked car with a t5 in it (like in a junk yard) that has low miles. you could probably find one for 3-400 bucks if you shopeed around.
