braking

my 95 mustang does not have the stopping power it used to have. my mechanic changed out the front brake pads and not the back...and i know the back needs it so do you think this is the problem for the weak breaking?

If they've never been changed it definitely wouldn't hurt. If you're hiring someone to do a brake job...nevermind. Do the rears yourself. You can rent the disc brake caliper tool from autozone. If you need any help PM me, don't give your money to someone to do something so easy.

no there is a special tool you need for the back brakes to push the caliper piston back in, or in means of the rear calipers you need to tool to spin the piston back in. it costs no more than 15-20 bucks at any autoparts store.

It's not one of those tools you find in everyone's toolbox...LOL It's not a "C" clamp. You'll notice that you don't have to change the rear brakes half as often as you do the fronts. I've had my current 95 for 3 yrs now and I've only done the rear brakes once. That was because they were shot when I got it.

You only have to bleed the brakes if the brake hose is disconnected from any of the calipers. Or, if you want to completely flush the system and add new fluid. If you are replacing pads or rotors they do not have to be bled. The only thing easier than doing a brake job is changing the oil and washing the car. Why people allow themselves to be raped by repair shops is beyond me.

and I know you dont have to bleed them when changing the pads but if he changes the pads and still has the problem its something that I would definately try especially if its never been done or not done for a long time it definately wouldnt hurt

Could be a difference in brake pad material in the new ones versus the old ones. Did he replace the rotors or at least have the old ones resurfaced? Glazed up used rotors with new pads will have an effect on stoping performance as well.

take them to a machine shop to have them turned. If you have a Napa in your area they might have one. In most cases they are about 9-12.00 to have them turned. If they are to far gone just buy a new set from Napa, probably 30 bucks a piece.
