Steering Wheel Play

HEy all,

My car is running awesome.. But there is a small amount of play in my steering.. i'd say around 1/8 of an inch either way, its not much but its enough on windy days to have we appear drunk LOL..

I have checked my front wheels.. and there level. as well I check for extra play and there nice and tite.

Any other ideas what this could be..?

Thanks

DOn

How hard are these to replace? DO I need to remove my steering column?

Don

EDIT: I bet its cause of the 245's on the front.. that wore it out?

I have a 94Gt and had the same problem but I had like 2" play. I looked under the hood at the steering input shaft that goes from the steering column down to the rack. It's below the brake booster and next to the headers on the drivers side. I found that there is a joint just above the u-joint where one shaft goes inside another. The joint is covered by a black plastic nut. My nut was dry rotted and the inside shaft was not tight inside the outer, so that left me the play. I just got a long drill bit and drilled the two pieces and put a 3/8" bolt through them both to keep them from moving until I can get a new input shaft. Works great and fixed the problem.

Hope that helps!!

Most likely a worn rag joint in the shaft.

99.9% sure it's the rag joint. I had the same exact problem on my last 95. I wouldn't blame anything other than age and header heat. Check out ebay for another one. I found one on there for 20 bucks BRAND NEW just in case the same thing happens to my current 95. Home for your Ford Mustang @ Blue Oval Industries used to sell '03 cobra shafts for around 40 bucks, not sure if they still carry them though.
