Explorer Heads?

on one of my other topics about upgrades, one person posted that i could put 96-00 ford explorer heads and intake manifold on my 95 gt and it would produce around 285 hp or more even more with port and polish. i was wondering if there was any truth to that and if anyone has or know anyone that has done it and if they got good results. the heads and manifold that i really want are kinda on the spendy side and cant afford them at the moment until tax time!!!! thank you for your time.

oh and also i read on another forum that with any type of "bigger head" replacement for more power done to one of these cars, the computer doesnt respond well and cant keep up with the air/fuel. they said that you would have to replace the computer with a 90-93 5.0 computer. is there any truth to that as well?? thank you

Yes...the sn-95 ecu does have its quirks and does not like mods of this nature...but YOU DO NOT have to switch ECUs to address these issues.

Im running my sn95 ECU (SCT tuned) with a large cam, heads, and intake...on a 351 Windsor in my 94 GT and it runs and drives great.

Any compatent tuner can fix the issues that the SN-95 ecu has with any mods.
Anyone who says other wise is either trying to sell you something you dont need or they just dont have a clue.

Just hold out and save your pennies untill you can get a good set of aftermarket heads...you wont regreat it.

Yes...you can use those heads and intake and make about 280 hp (at the crank)....provided you get all the suporting parts and peices to go with it.

I highly recommend the TFS Head,Cam,Intake kit or the similar kit by Holley.
Its the complete package...minus some odds and ends and a tune, that will make ~300hp at the wheels.

These kits are by far the best bang for the buck your going to get.

There really isnt a "best" kit...they are so close in comparison.

But I do belive the TFS offers more room to grow...

Then again...its a matter of opinion between the two.

The kit will run you about $2300 from Summit Racing
(thats about as good of price as your going to find anywhere)
Here is the link:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

To get the full potential of their kit, you will also need a set of 24# injectors, 70mm Mass Air meter and throtle body, a good fuel pump, and some dyno time and a custom tune.
Same goes for the Holley kit or any other combo you may peice together.

Plan to spend about $3500 for the whole deal after its all said and done.

This may sound like a lot...but its a great foundation to begin with.
Its basicly a 125 hp bolt on deal with great drivability and reliability.

Then...down the road when you want more power (this will happen)...you can add a blower, turbo, or nitrous and make alot more HP very very easy.

I don't completely agree with the above. I'm not saying the trickflows are bad in any way but if your on a budget, u can always find some used gt-40p's for around $200-$300. there no trickflows by no means, but there a good step up for the green. same for roller rockers, u can pick up a good used set for around $80-$150. check out the corral classifieds @ www.corral.net

Hey I agree with Justincredible. (he know what he is talking about 10.4) I am going to go with the trickflow street package. Yes the gt40s are better then stock but you would only end up wanting to upgrade after you do the gt40 heads. if your going to do it you dont want to end up doing it all over again.

hey Justincredible where is Leitchvegas, KY. I was thinking about moving to Hebron KY it close to ohio when I get out of the military

Its actualy Leitchfield, Ky....but we like to call it "Leitchvegas" due to all the bs that goes on around here.
Its in south-central Kentucky just above Bowling Green.

And yes...the GT-40 heads will make more power than the stock units...but not much more.
Id rather do it right the first time than half-ass it now and be wanting more later on down the road.

well i took your advice and i got aprroved for a loan through the bank and i just ordered the trickflow kit from summit. i read through everyones replys and i also agree with Justincredible, i was going to just buy some heads and intake manifold to give me alittle more power now but i was thinking and i also consulted some of my buddies, that why spend money on a little gain when you could take that money and put it towards the parts that you really want and will give you better results. thank you for the advice and i will keep you posted on my mustang. thanks again!

Your going to love it.

But remember...don't get into a rush and don't expect instant results once you get everything bolted back together. That head, cam, intake combo and the stock ECU wont get along very well until it gets tuned on a chassis dyno.
After that...that combo will scream.

You're gonna need an elbo for that upper intake to fit the TB, 70MM TB, and 80MM MAF or 70MM, but stock is not gonna let that kit do its thing, also to work with that TFS kit.

You need to take it to a reputable tuner who has experience with the sn95 setups.
Most SCT tuners fall into this category.

TFS makes the elbow that you need for your 94-95 application. Its about $90 from Summit.

Are you talking about installing the topend kit or the tuning?
