Starting Issue

Car-1995 Mustang GT

Problem- My car sometimes takes too long to start. When I turn the key to start it, it takes a good 7-9 seconds to finally start. But if I make a quick stop somewhere like a gas station or somewhere and start my car it fires up instantly, but if I leave my car somewhere for lets say 1.5 hrs and more it will do this. I have no idling or running problems just starting. Any inputs?

both 95's that I've owned have done the same thing. It wasn't until I put the 347 in that it starts right up. Got me stumped!

when you first go to start your car... turn your key to the "on" position and let it sit there for a few seconds with the dash lit up. You should hear the fuel pump priming. When you hear the pump stop its prime (takes about 3-4 seconds), turn the key to "start" and it should fire right up. You need to make sure you let the fuel pump prime before you start. Maybe that will solve your issue.

You might also want to change your spark plug gap. Stock is .052-.054 try going to .044 and see what happens.

I'll remember that and start following that procedure. I usually do that but I don't wait three-four seconds, I just wait until I hear the fuel turn on.

try checking your fuel pressure, should be between 35 to 45 psi, if its lower, you might need a new fuel pump soon, i just fixed the same problem with my car, had to prime it 4 to 5 times, or it wouldn't fire.

Good call. It sounds like the problem is a leaking fuel pump check valve so this will at least alleviate it. The ultimate solution might be to replace the pump so it would be a good excuse to upgrade it.
