e brake help

so i was driving in some crazy ass rain today, like so much rain was just hittin the undercarriage of my car. I pull into an underground parkin garage ( cuz my car has a cancerous leak from above the drivers side windshield) and i pulled the ebrake and i noticed that it was kinda easy to pull... like no tension, but then i pulled again and it was ok... so i go shop for some food, and then come back and i put it down and noticed there's no weight on it again... i pull back up and theres NO tension at all.. tried another couple times.. realized that the ebrake is not workin, cuz i was able to actually drive with the handle up. So what i needed help with was: what could this possibly be? about how much does it cost for the part and to fix? can i fix it myself? and is it ok to drive without it?

I figure as long as i dont park on any uphill/downhills and leave it in first when i park it, i should be fine, but im not sure. so yeah any help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys.

(if you know anything about curing the car's cancer and sealing the leak that would be nice too haha)

00S37 is the recall number. Pretty easy to do and takes less than a half hour. Covers all 94-01 Mustangs with manual transmissions.

holy crap i didnt know that was done, i got the car used, so dont know if it was already done prior to buyin it, i got it like 4 years ago... so where do i take it? any dealer? if that doesnt work is there anything else that can be done? and is there any danger in drivin the car as is? it doesnt affect the driveability of the car at all.

Yes it's free. "S" Recalls do not expire regardless of time or mileage.

Just high enough to stick your head under it. If you use your e-brake alot, you may have worn down the shoes if it's the shoe type. Newer car park brake cables rarely stretch, but it happens.
