PI Head Swap
I am about to a PI head swap shortly but i have a couple of questions first.
1. If i were to buy pi heads out of a 2001 Bullitt Mustang, would i need to buy new valve covers? or would the ones out of my 97 gt work? 2. How hard is the swap to do? I will be doing it on the garage floor so no lifts or anything. It doesnt look like doing the actual swap of the heads will be that bad. But i have heard that the timing can be a bitch on these mustangs? Will rep for help! THanks |

depending on the bullitt you may need new valve covers... and the swap is easy as long as you have the patients...

Addressing the timing thing: it's really not hard. Just follow the timing guide in the chilton's book and you'll be set. Be sure to turn the engine over a few times by hand just to be sure. I'd be sure to have a vice grip handy to compress the chain tensioners though. Those were a PITA.

I think those are explorer heads man from like a late 01 early 02. Mine are SHM. The swap isnt too bad and you can do it in your garage. It sucks like all head changing/head gasket jobs...but the result is awesome

For the record, the 15.2 was before the PI swap, heh. I just haven't had it to the track since then. My friend's stang ran 14.4 consistently when he brought it to the track and though and I beat him when we raced.

This is a good idea... only for one thing... just to have a slow car still.... i know that tenths are what edge out the competiton... and if that extra half point of compression even gives me only 3 horsepower, I am going to bump the compression up... Guess its all in how much money you want to spend too

I know I went from 15.7 npi to 13.90's PI then slapped on a S/C & gears and nailed 11.98 with 10lbs. Try getting a safe tune with a S/C, stock bottom end and anything more than 6lbs of boost with 10.6:1 compression...wont happen.
99% of all NPI engines are going to be high mileage engines and increasing cylinder pressure is just one added possibility of failure and unreliability. Why wouldn't you want to gain back some life of an engine by buying a low mileage engine and be able to upgrade later? Also Tearing into an engine doesn't seem smart to me when an engine swap could be done in a day. If I were to do this all over again, I would have done one of two things... Swapped to to a 4v and S/C'd from there OR swapped to a 4v and built one nasty high compression street car with a bottle for the track. |

or just a small pushrod engine with a carb and a small 250 shot thats my plan... should get 11.50s at my atltiude...but i could do a PI head swap in less than a day if its just a head swap no degreening of cams and all that shit... and i put a NPI 27K mile motor, and guess what it ran better that all the PI n/a mustangs in my car club... closest one was a 14.89 and that was a PI engine with full bolt ons minus longtubes and cams... my NPI stock ran 14.68. guess it could be argued quite a bit... but mine also had a fresh set of head gaskets and been gone through and now has less than 450 miles on itsince june.

99-04 gt. Youre gonna want an 01 or newer though i think because then you wont have to buy different valve covers. Mayve someone else will chime in with exact details
