Auto To 5 Speed Swap. HELP!!!!

I currently own a 1997 Mustang GT, and I absolutely love it. However, since it was given to me as a gift, I had to take everything as it was, including the fact that it's an automatic So I want to switch it to a 5 Speed T45 Transmission. However, I'm not sure how to go about it, for it's not enough to get the job done. Along with getting the T45, I need the clutch cables, new clutch, new flywheel, new clutch and brake pedals (Not sure about the brake pedals) and all the other parts to put it in. I'm assuming too that the car's computer system will have to be edited as well.

Does anyone have any idea of what I should do or how to do this so I can successfully have a manual Mustang? (I Don't Want To Buy A New One, So Please Don't Give Me That As An Answer!)

It's not that there's anything wrong with an Auto, I just want a Manual.

If you can post that on this forum, that would be amazing. I'm assuming all the parts would be the same, despite that yours was a Mach 1?

the tranny would be a 3650, but it would be incredibly similar.

I looked it up. All 96-01 GT Mustangs used T-45 trannys. The 3650 is used in the new Mustangs.

the swap will need to be donw to a t45 or t5, i dont think there is a mechanical 3650 option.

I did this swap way back in like 1999, so I hope I can recall all the BS I had to do.

PCM, you can get a tuner to shut off the auto trans functions in your stock PCM. If you don't, the car will run and drive fine since the trans is controlled separately from the motor, but you'll fail emissions testing since you'll have a check engine light and a bunch of trans codes along with a flashing OD light.

You'll need a manual trans harness.

There is a brake/shifter interlock cable that needs to be removed.

Manual pedal assy and you might as well do the HD clutch quadrant while it's out. I did the firewall clutch adjuster, too.

Ford HD clutch cable

Make sure the T45/TR3550/TKO has the clutch arm pivot stud and if not get one.

Clutch fork and cover for the bell housing

Flywheel

Clutch kit with alignment tool, pressure plate, clutch disk, and throw out bearing

Pilot bearing

Ford OEM flywheel bolts (don't go buy any from Lowes because they might not be proper grade and if they snap off your clutch and flywheel will become a saw blade through your floor board).

Ford OEM pressure plate to flywheel bolts (Ford OEM only see above).

Ford OEM Manual trans bell housing to block bolts

Clutch dust shield thingy

T45, stock or after-market shifter. If you go TR3550/TKO it supposed to have a nice shifter already. I used a B&M ripper on mine anyway.

You'll need the leather shifter cover and a shift knob

If you go T45, the trans cross member will need to be relocated rearward, However, if you go with a TR3550/TKO, it will bolt right in. That is if the new TKO has the rear support in the same place as my older TR3550.

If you reuse your stock DS and install the TR3550/TKO, you'll need the correct spline yoke and a DS spacer.

If you go TR3550/TKO you'll also need a bell housing.

Your speedo gear should work fine, but look it up in ford parts catalog to be sure.

Trans fluid per manufacturers specs. It's easier to fill it through the shifter for the 3550/TKO once you gt it in the car.

That's all I recall for now.

Disclaimer: It's been about 8 years since I did this swap so make a list and double check everything I've listed to be sure before you start this.

I used two floor jacks, jack up the car about 3.5-4ft off the ground, supported it with 6 huge jack stands and two ramps, plus foundation bricks under the tires just to be safe.

Tips: (1) Auto trans is heavy, drain the fluid! (2) trans are shipped dry so don't forget to fill it up! (3) I had to notch maybe 1/4' from the shifter hole in the trans tunnel to clear the front of my B&M Ripper Shifter. (4) It's best to get a leather shifter cover from a j/y since it comes with the plastic lower part attached. If you just order the leather cover, there is no way that I know of to connectit to the plastic auto shifter cover. (5) Get a manual and TQ every F'n bolt to spec! Don't F**k around on this! (6) Use Loctite where rec'd by Ford in the service manual. (7) Support that car well and have someone keep a regular check on you while you're working under that car.

Good luck!
