pull the cover and check backlash and gear pattern. not too bad if just backlash is off. you can reset the shims and correct it.

i don't know if i just over worried but i feel the gears in my stick when under deceleration also the whine is only under decel. i might be under acel but i don't hear it over the exhaust. i did check the gear pattern before i put the cover on and it set deep but not touching the bottom of the ring. it wasn't quite center on the teeth but it was damn close.

100 bucks.. i already have a tuner so if that does work with a custom tune then there is no need

A tuner won't help you with a pre-'99 Stang, you have a mechanical speedo.

When I went with 17"s on my '85 GT, I had to install a new speedo gear in trans. Was VERY easy to do and solved inaccuracy issue. I was off by 5 mph at 70 mph, so was all good.

Contact Ford and they can do the math for what gear you need. Was like $15.00 if I remember correctly and was like 18 years ago.

^ tis easy

Just jack the car up and remove the speedo cable from drivers side of trans (was on drivers side of my T-5 back in da day) You should get only a little trans fluid out, but cannot say for certain as you probably have a T-45 and may be different. The gear is only held in by a small clip and took all of 10 miniutes to do.

Check out ***THIS*** page for some good info

+1 on the speed gear change.

On our cars (96-98) you can fix the speedo 2 ways.

1) with the gear ... $10-$20 ... Speedometer Recalibration Gears - '79-'98 Ford Mustang
2) with the speedcal ... $100 ... Speed Calibrator - SpeedCal at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

The speedcal is supposed to be more accurate.

well my speedo was off by 5mph before the gear swap, and its 5mph fast so its a safeguard for me not to go over the speed limit ad now back to the gear whine... ill see if i can get audio of it, and when i take it apart take pics of the gear marking compound to show the gear pattern

^ over time, you will falsely "add" mileage to your ride, so I recommend you correct it.

I also have gear whine under decel on my car with 4.10s. My backlash is set up correctly. So even when your car is set up right you may still get some gear whine. My gears do not stick though, so that might be a reason to go back in yours.

I heard yesterday from a reputable mustang shop in my town, that both richmond and motive gears will whine due to the company cutting corners. They said the only gear worth putting in is FRPP. They said no matter what, with richmond it will whine, and with motive they had to re-mark add shims, drive, add shims, drive, add shims, and they said it still had a whine after it was set perfectly!

a speedo gear is 7.99 from the local ford dealership. and its simple to pop in. and if you have an auto i believe the sct might work, but if its a 5spd, then no it wont.

It could also be that your car is just spinning more rpm's. You are spinning 25% more revolutions per tire turn now than you were stock.
