new guy needs a little help

Hey every one , hows it goin ? Bought my second mustang last week and i love it ! I had a 65 10 years ago and it was not much more than your typical primered hot rod with a mild 289 . It was fun , but my 96 is a little more fun to drive , likes to get sideways .. My question , and yes i have spent a couple days searching , is with the cooling system . Im pretty sure the previous owner had the 96 to 97 swap done by the dealer , but the if i sit at a light , or drivethrough for a couple mins , the temp gauge starts going up to the a in the word normal . I have looked and the fan is not comming on . My biggest question is should turning the ac on deff make the fan come on , even if the ac compressor is not comming on ? When i get more time i was gonna just try appling power straight to the fan and see if i just have a bad fan , but i am confused about all the things that limit or supply power to the fan . Also , i think the previous owner had it programmed and i have read on here something about that messing with the fan controller ? Does that mean i just need to install a stand alone temp switch and relay on the fan ? If someone will please point me in the right direction , i would really appreciate it ...

It sound like your on the right path, checking the fan motor would be the starting point. If the fan works at that point the temp switch may have gone south..

ok , so i checked and the fan is good and turning the the ac on does trigger the fan . Im assuming the temp switch is defaulty or it is typical gets hot . I have seen some people mentioning of the fan on all time mod , but i figure that is harder on the fan , and it would take longer for the car to properly warm up right ? So should i try and use a generic temp switch and set it around the 180 range ? Or will that affect the performance of the car ?

It could affect the performance a little and cause more fuel consumption, how much I would run factory parts until you have your ecu flashed or buy a handheld tuner to adjust for the lower temps.

I'm having the heating problems with my car also. Are you sure the upgrade was done? I've tried about everything to fix mine, and nothing works. I'm now in the process of changing to the 97 setup. You could look at your fan and look up a fan for sale for a 97 and see if they look the same. The 96 is differant in looks. Just a thought before you go through too much.

not sure if the upgrade was done or not ... Would some one please post pics of the difference in 96 to 97 fans , or tell me dimensions or someother way to tell for sure . I called the local parts stores and no one has in stock to look at .

Well I guess that didn't work. Here is a link to a 96.

If you do a search for a 97 you'll see the diff.

I guess I need to be patient. You can see there is a big differance. Like I said, I've tried about everything on my 96 and it always runs hot.

Sorry one more thing. I've been trying to find out if the plugs are the same on the fans for the elec. If you have the 97 fan, could you see if it looks like someone sliced in a new plug also? Thanks

well , i deff have the old fan . I did however finally let it sit long enough to have the fan kick on . It kicked on when the temp gauge hit the middle of the a in normal . I was a little scared of lettin it get that high but maybe that isnt that hot after all ? I found some tech specs and it is suppose to kick on when water temp gets to 220 and kick off when it drops to 200 i think is what it said . Why would ford let it get so hot before kicking on ? The coolant will start boiling around 226 or so . That seems like it is runnin hot to me . I also noticed while messin with it last night that after the temp gauge got to the middle , turning the ac or def on would NOT kick on my fan . So what is up with that ? It does kick on the fan if the car is not warmed up yet . Sounds like my best bet is to wire up my own temp switch to kick on the fan at around 200 just to be safe . Or can that temp settin be changed with a programmer , cuz i was told by the previous owner that the timming had been advanced so i assumed that the ecu has been reprogrammed or maybe a chip installed .

I think that the fan can be reprogrammed to kick on at a diff temp. Not 100% sure though. The other thing is that the stock gauge isn't the most accurate thing. You might try and wire in a cheapo gauge and see exactly where you're at with the temp. I got pissed at mine and let it go just past the line on the hot side and it never boiled over. Mine usually rides at the a in the normal. It might be your not really getting too hot.
